“President” Trump (white male) calls the free press “the enemy of the people.”
Two days later, right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos (white male) calls on vigilantes to “start shooting” journalists.
The next day after that, a violent troublemaker (white male) with a grudge against a newspaper that he has nursed for SEVEN YEARS picks that as the time to finally go ballistic and murder five journalists. The timing as to why a seven year grudge finally erupted into violence at just this time is suspect right when the “president” of the United States ramps up his vulgar, violent rhetoric.
Violent white males call for violence and a white shooter who had been teetering on the edge for seven years finally goes over the edge.
So of course, Sean Hannity (white male broadcaster) blames it on a 79-year-old black woman.
The shooter was not Muslim. Not from a Muslim-majority country or any country on Trump’s list.
The shooter was not Latino and was not seeking asylum.
The shooter was not one of those dangerous “tender age” toddlers.
Trump deflects. It was one white male shooter. He tells everyone it’s the brown illegal (and legal) immigrants that are the real criminals, and people forget the facts. He is disgustingly good at what he does.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
I always preferred the Detroit News to the Detroit Free Press but that might have to do with delivering the FREEP at 6 am in the dead of a Michigan winter when I was 10.
“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.
Look at the tyranny of party — at what is called party allegiance, party loyalty — a snare invented by designing men for selfish purposes — and which turns voters into chattles, slaves, rabbits, and all the while their masters, and they themselves are shouting rubbish about liberty, independence, freedom of opinion, freedom of speech, honestly unconscious of the fantastic contradiction; and forgetting or ignoring that their fathers and the churches shouted the same blasphemies a generation earlier when they were closing their doors against the hunted slave, beating his handful of humane defenders with Bible texts and billies, and pocketing the insults and licking the shoes of his Southern master.
If only they would use ALL of this instead of cherry picking.
The Journalist’s Creed – Walter Williams 1914
- I believe in the profession of journalism.
- I believe that the public journal is a public trust; that all connected with it are, to the full measure of their responsibility, trustees for the public; that acceptance of a lesser service than the public service is betrayal of this trust.
- I believe that clear thinking and clear statement, accuracy and fairness are fundamental to good journalism.
- I believe that a journalist should write only what he holds in his heart to be true.
- I believe that suppression of the news, for any consideration other than the welfare of society, is indefensible.
- I believe that no one should write as a journalist what he would not say as a gentleman; that bribery by one’s own pocketbook is as much to be avoided as bribery by the pocketbook of another; that individual responsibility may not be escaped by pleading another’s instructions or another’s dividends.
- I believe that advertising, news and editorial columns should alike serve the best interests of readers; that a single standard of helpful truth and cleanness should prevail for all; that the supreme test of good journalism is the measure of its public service.
- I believe that the journalism which succeeds best — and best deserves success — fears God and honors Man; is stoutly independent, unmoved by pride of opinion or greed of power, constructive, tolerant but never careless, self-controlled, patient, always respectful of its readers but always unafraid, is quickly indignant at injustice; is unswayed by the appeal of privilege or the clamor of the mob; seeks to give every man a chance and, as far as law and honest wage and recognition of human brotherhood can make it so, an equal chance; is profoundly patriotic while sincerely promoting international good will and cementing world-comradeship; is a journalism of humanity, of and for today’s world.
H.L. Mencken on democracy, government and politics. … The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

May we always have a free press and to borrow from the Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” so may we always bring truth to the light.

The free press has been purchased by corporations. They now tow the company line.

The TV news media need to stop reading Trump’s tweets on the air. They aren’t news, they are generally just insults and lies.

One of the keys to a strong democracy is a free press, which is why Trump is trying to make them an “enemy of the people”
