When I went to high school Catcher in the Rye was verboten. Our English Teacher assigned it to us and told us to keep it quiet. It was the only assigned book that I ever liked. I guess that is why the school board hated it!!
I read Tom Sawyer. That was pretty good. It was in a book with the stories Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn and Moby Dick. I read the first 2 but I didn’t like Moby Dick so I stopped reading that one.
I never even heard of Banner in the Sky. Sounds like a terrific book, except that the high-risk goal seems pointless (along the lines of “My father’s goal was to play Chicken with freight trains every day until he turned 70, but a train killed him when he was 30, so I’m going to honor him by playing Chicken with freight trains every day until I’M 70.”)

I read all but two of them when I was a kid. The only ones I didn’t read were Banner in the Sky, and My Antonia.

I wouldn’t force any kid to read The Red Pony. Hated that story.

Well, former baseball catcher/sportscaster Bob Uecker did write an autobiographical book entitled “Catcher in the Wry”.

Dad means well, but I doubt any of those books are going to inspire a love of reading in Nate…

Sure. Just what Nate needs to read about: an adolescent boy’s contempt for humanity.
