A gamma ray burst capable of ending life on Earth would come from within our galaxy, not from another galaxy — that would be too far away. Satellites currently spot gamma ray bursts from within other galaxies at a rate of about one per day.

Gamma bursts have been cited as one reason for the Fermi paradox, ie, “where are all the aliens?” Gamma bursts wipe them out before they can go interstellar.
Gamma Ray Bursts happen all of the time. However it has to be aimed directly at us to affect us. And we have several protections that would keep it from “killing all life” on this planet. Also the distance will figure into it as well.

There are also people who postulate time travellers, but Newsweek assures me that they don’t exist.
