Maybe we should take the advice security experts have been giving us since Columbine.
Locked doors. Metal detectors. Armed door guards. Ideally an armed security officer for every 1000 students, 1 per floor.
It really is that simple. Every one of the these recent incidents would have been prevented or at least minimized if all the kids (and adults) went through simple metal detectors at the door.
Local governments of all types and sizes, all political persuasions, have rejected this idea for nearly 20 years. Too expensive is the usual answer. Too intrusive. Make the school like prisons. Blah blah blah.
Well, the guns aren’t going away. Not now, not for a long time. Not ever if the SCOTUS remains true to the BoR. You don’t have to stop lobbying for that to change, but while doing it you can’t keep your head buried in the sand. The problem is here NOW.
Most of these cities and towns manage to find money for all sorts of non-essential things, but they can’t break loose a couple hundred thousand a year to pay for security for the kids. Sure, keep on pushing for gun restrictions, but you had darned well better spend some effort on getting your local school boards to cough up money for security NOW!
Lester, I have no idea what you mean here. Seems to me this boxing ring thing is a go-to kind of theme for you. It doesn’t work here. Our schools are not, should not be, a place where any kind of fighting or violence takes place. We don’t need a strong offense, we need a mighty defense.
I just want to say that it’s not Uncle Sam’s job to protect our schools. Our governors need to quit sitting on their hands, waiting for Congress, or Trump to do something. We need proactive state leadership, not leadership which reacts to Washington.
Australia did it cheaper by not prostituting themselves to the gun industry. It was a conservative government who instituted the gun ban, and jeepers it worked!
Andylit says, “…Locked doors. Metal detectors. Armed door guards. Ideally an armed security officer for every 1000 students, 1 per floor.” And how are you going to pay for that? You bozos can’t even afford textbooks or school food for your children.
Hey, Andy; what do you think of the idea of giving all the children Bibles and sending them home? They’ll be safe, it’s cheaper than your solutions, and they won’t develop all of those dangerous critical thinking skills.
A Navy SEAL comes home from Afghanistan on leave, with a purple heart and Bronze Star for valor, but can’t buy a gun because he only just turned 20. Arming every teacher, so that each mass shooting will likely double the number of fatalities in the panic and firefight if anything happens. Both elements are stupid.
A better start, like Israel and Switzerland have, is to regulate firearms, like the Constitution calls for. Switzerland even records who has every round of ammunition, and when and where it’s used. Israel knows who has the guns, and yes both countries have “militias”, that allow them to even HAVE guns.
Do the Brady Bill right, and retain sales records of firearms permanently by the government, instead of destroying the record after five days, and illegal transfers of weapons, or carelessly ignoring who has access to your firearms, will stop. BTW, NRA and gun manufacturers CAN keep those records, and use them for recruitment and future sales.
We can start getting it right, by looking at those two countries where “everyone” has guns- REGISTERED and monitored firearms! Read “DC vs Heller” for Scalia’s commentary on the DUTY of government to regulate firearms when you leave your house with them.

Yeah.
Arm the teachers.
Arm the administrators.
Arm the students.
Arm the bus drivers.
What could go wrong?

@KENOSHAMARGE: Gun grabbers are anti-American.
I’ve never had a problem with guns in the past, however, I’m beginning to believe that gun lovers are anti-human.

Mr. Lester are you volunteering to do this?

The labeling is wrong. It should be “Shooter” for the combatant and “USA” for the ring.
