    How did this cliche ever begin? The usual presumptuous guess based on western 19th and early 20th century idea that primitive people were most certainly dumb brutes. “We deduce through our vast superiority that they hit each with clubs a lot, and grunted, and most assuredly said ’Ook ook.” Of course, the characters in B.C. are none too bright anyway. And we haven’t even met Grog yet.

    I suspect this was funny 60 years ago because it’s so ridiculous. Whatever the stereotypes, I find it hard to believe that anyone thought it was actually done.

    A much funnier strip from around this time period had the Fat Broad asking one of the cavemen if he believed in gender equality. After he says yes, she whacks HIM on the head and drags HIM by the hair! In the last panel ,he wonders what he said to offend her.
