In the future, the old people will still get plenty of sleep because they’ll have figured out that there are things that are more enjoyable than social media.

In the eyes of that kid, and probably Frazz, and even Jef, a high percentage of GoComics commenters are “old people.”

I am an “old people” Jef….

We use computers, or we woudn’t be in this forum…

    we have smartphones…

and we don’t need a grandson to show us what buttons to push.

My 98 year old friend texts me all the time…

I admit she’s an exception, and her computer questions are crazy-making…. but she can text, and she sells on eBay.

I don’t like social media (except GoComics) and I’m not on Facebook…

but lots and lots of “old people” are.

When this kid in the strip gets old, I doubt there will be many people left who didn’t grow up using technology…

It’s making inroads even into the developing world, for good or ill.

BTW, I sleep LESS than I used to… a lot of us “old people” get insomnia….

but we use the internet, in fact, we probably use it more than the younger people who still have to go to work at non-computer jobs.

People even older than me invented the internet…

    and computers.

    Now get offa my lawn.

Not being from the USA I had not heard of grant in question. Real progressive and inclusive. It is available to citizens and “residents” of the US and does not discriminate on the basis of age. So SuzyS, not everyone is guilty of ageism… :)

Old people nap in the afternoon because we CAN.

The US is one of the only cultures where an afternoon nap isn’t considered standard. Because that’s 15 minutes you could spend making money for someone else.

Interesting. With Frazz’s “yesterday” comment we can infer that the Frazz timeline proceeds at the same pace as real life. Not so in many other comics.

my 80 year old mom went into the store to buy a new computer. The young man who chose to “help” her was in for a surprise when she knew exactly what she wanted. Sure now and then a program gave her pause, but over all she was very tech savvy.

I am ‘old person.’ I think of computers and the internet as a tool. I will use them when they make my life easier, and not use the when an analog device, otherwise known as paper, is easier and more efficient. I also value my privacy and therefore am very choosy about who and what I let in.

Babies and old people have probably done most of the world’s human sleeping for centuries, simply because they don’t have to go to school or work, and babies need a lot of sleep to grow. But cats and dogs and a number of other animals beat most human adult sleep time by hours each day!

I have found that while I don’t know anything about video games, I have more computer skills than most of the youth I meet (and I meet quite a few from several local universities). Getting old does not mean you have no computer skills or life. I am so busy in my retirement that quite frankly, I don’t know how I had time to work for a living. Alas, it is fairly common for youth to believe they know it all and the older generations are stupid dinosaurs. ;→

I started out with an Altair 8800 and now have a real screamer of a laptop. I don’t care for social media, but I’ve learned to use technology to my advantage. Kids come to me for help. And I am a citizen with seniority. A lot of seniority! And I take a nap whenever I damn well choose! Take that, young whipper-snapper!

Is he kidding? Lots of people, both experts and regular folks, blame poor sleep on smartphone use. This kid is no genius. She’s just stating the obvious.

There are three of us home, most days, and we are all usually on a computer. The kid – he’s thirty something- is writing code to tweak the VR game he is designing. His seventy-five plus dad is downstairs. If he’s not using AutoCAD to design something for a customer, he is in the shop actually manufacturing the part he designed. What am I doing? This. Wasting time, while I’m thinking. I do most of my productive work after midnight, when I bend words onto pages.

We sleep in shifts, because that’s how our brains work. The house is hard-wired in every room to connect computers to the internet. 75 yr old dad did that, too, between repairing the refrigerator and rebuilding a motor for a friends car.
