This is probably Michael testing his mother by trying to force her to enforce the idea that they should all eat together at the dinner table. And yet, that doesn’t happen. The family is always shown eating together at the kitchen table, and no one ever suggests otherwise until today.

My mother would have replied “No. You can eat at the table with the rest of us”.

Learn to read, Mike. Comic books are quite entertaining, at least!

At my house, dinner was always in front of the tv (unless we had company).

There’s a simple answer here, Elly. “No. You can’t eat in front of the TV.”

    Lynn’s Notes:

Here’s a strip that should have ended at the third panel. Sometimes I’d send off something I was sure of. Then, when I saw it in the paper later, I’d see how it could have been improved.

I remember when TV dinners first appeared in our area. My Mom actually bought some of those folding tray-tables so we could eat in front of the TV.

Which of the following is the greatest addiction?

    A.) Promiscuity for Thailand.

    B.) Alcoholism for Ireland.

    C.) TV for Michael.

I’m afraid I would’ve said “that’s another week” and walked off. We called what Micheal’s doing digging a hole. So when the whining started I’d just say “need a shovel?”

Bill Watterson already did that one. There was a Calvin & Hobbes where Calvin had misbehaved in front of the babysitter. As a result, he was punished. The strip showed Calvin whining to Hobbes “No TV for a week, what injustice! Well, I will show my parents, I will just sit in front of the TV with the power off!”

Do you know how kids like Mike got so addicted to TV? It’s because when they were little, their mothers used the TV as a babysitter. Stick the kid in front of the TV, turn it on, and hopefully you don’t have to bother with them for a few hours.

My Mother would have been happy just to get me to eat…and to Elly I would say…pick your battles.
