The little rat that died in my apartment started to stink as the bacteria went to work breaking down the cells into manageable materials for consumption. Without that bacteria nothing would decompose. Why the trees in the Carboniferous forests didn’t decay, just stacked up then compressed over time and became coal. Not anymore though during World War 2 the Nazi Germans found a way of taking modern plant material and converting it to oil rather quickly. Last I heard it needed translating and was at Texas A. & M. Our problem is getting away from burning carbon based compounds in the first place.
