Retired justice John Paul Stevens has posted an op-ed in the NYT today calling for the repeal of the 2nd amendment. It is interesting reading and gives a basis for defining the phrases “security of the state” and “well-regulated militia” that I had not previously understood, as well as historical background on supreme court decisions relating to this amendment.
Revocation of the NRA’s status as a tax exempt non-profit organization could pose a serious hindrance to their ability to prop up politicians with campaign funds. The IRS considers them such because they perform a social service by advocating seminars on gun safety. If churches can be stripped of their non-profit status for engaging in political activities, why not apply the same reasoning to the NRA?
I, for one, would have no problem if all the heads of the leadership of the NRA exploded. Referring to the NRA is a bit simplistic, since 70% of NRA members favor background checks, for example, while 100% of the leadership does whatever the arms industry tells them instead.

This cartoon does suggest an answer the the question, “Why doesn’t the NRA ever support anger management therapy.”

If you have the stomach to listen to some of La Pierre’s speeches, he looks just like the guy in this toon.
