I think John is just happy to see something different about Elly. She has always been a stuck-in-the-mud about her appearance. Plain, boring and generic. I know a lot of women like that. I could find a picture of them 40 years ago and they dress the same and wear the same hairstyle. Just 40 years older.
I know I commented this two days ago, but the way John is snuggling into Elly’s hair instead of Elly herself reminds me so much of the Amy Schumer “Perm” skit. Here, again, is the link – you’ll see what I mean!
Congratulations – you have managed to make a big enough change that even a MAN could tell something was different, and that it was the hair that changed.
That’s not always the case – human males can be surprisingly blind to more subtle changes, like the removal of just a few inches.
Even though John likes it, Elly you don’t. It’s your hair and you should style it the way you want it. When the time comes change it again but this time to something you would like

What have you done, Elly? Let’s see:
1. With your new hair you no longer remind John of his mother.
2. There is nothing John likes more than the smell of acid in the morning.
3. John hates the haircut, but will use any excuse to get Elly into bed.
4. John doesn’t realize this is Elly and has mistaken her for the hygienist with whom he is having an affair.
5. John doesn’t realize this is Elly and has mistaken her for the poodle dog with whom he is having an affair.
6. Now you know just why John’s favourite character on Saturday Night LIve was Roseanne Roseannadanna.

I think John really does like it. That’s why Ellie is worried…but it’s sweet of him to do what he did. No weird faces, etc.

The good news is the phrase “What have I done” is down by one exclamation point in the fourth panel.

Given John’s usual indifference or occasional slighting off put, this could be bad

“What have I done?” You’ve unleashed John’s inner Romeo.

Awww, John, it is so sweet of you to like Elly’s new hair look.

Wait till he gets a whiff of her hair with his nose in it like that. A new perm is smelly for a while.
