Our present interpretation of the 2nd Amdt is a false one, but this cartoon is way truer than any of us should be willing to admit.

No right afforded in the Bill of Rights is unlimited. Free speech doesn’t cover shouting “fire” in a crowded theater for the purpose of causing mischief, nor does it cover libel. Freedom of religion doesn’t allow you to sacrifice children in the name of your deity, nor does it allow you to enter into multiple legally recognized marriages at the same time. The SCotUS ruled that the government can place limits on gun ownership. So why do 2nd Amendment proponents keep insisting there’s no limit to your right to bare arms?

There ARE limits, some of which are imbecilic. Age restrictions, deciding that certain people are not worthy of the right (imbecilic), weapon type restrictions, ammo restrictions._______. If you REALLY cared about reducing gun violence, you’d be all hot-to-trot about banning handguns. 99.999% of all gun-involved crime involves a handgun. This is an established fact. Much of the nonsense swirling around about “assault weapons” is dogmatic posturing from people who’ve seen one too many Schwarzenegger or Stallone movies. The facts don’t support any of the arguments being made about them.

How’s about that good old 25th Amendment? Should we be blowing the dust of that one?

@JLocke, we are using our FIRST Amendment rights to gather, to speak, and to demand action from the government. Calling an American a “shrew” (sexist much?) for objecting for a falsely interpreted Second Amendment and thousands of preventable deaths every year is both fallacious in reasoning and insulting in tone.

So, JL, when you get in your car you intend to commit murder? Should we notify the police about you? After all, that’s all cars are good for. And whatever will we do about those criminals who force their victims to smoke until they die?

Can you say specious arguments? I didn’t think you could.

What many people (and the NRA) seem to forget (or actively try to) is that “Rights” entail “Responsibilities”. A constant idea in Law is that, “Lose the Responsibility and you lose the Right.”

I call myself a liberal, and as such, Wayne LaPierre claims I’m trying to abolish the 2nd Amendment so that I can get rid of all of your freedoms. This is a bald faced lie, and it’s wrong on a few levels. Mostly, he’s trying to get you to buy more guns. That’s all he really cares about. But just on a purely academic level, do any of you right wing lib haters understand the relationship between the words: liberal and liberty? But here’s my real point. I have one question for all the gun owners who are loudly claiming their 2nd Amendment rights. What part of a “well regulated militia” are you? In case you don’t know, the phrase in quotes is the operative phrase taken directly from the Constitution.

Interesting thought…if you use the classic definitions of “Liberal” and “Conservative”, shouldn’t the CONSERVATIVES being the ones calling for restrictions on the easy access of guns?

CONSERVATIVE; Adj. :holding to traditional attitudes and values and cautious about change or innovation, typically in relation to politics or religion. I.E. “We better go slowly when thinking about letting everyone have guns. Let’s study it for a while, and then we’ll see…”

LIBERAL. Adj.: open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values. I.E. “Oh, what the heck, let’s make it easy for EVERYONE to have as many guns as they want!”

Just think about it for a minute…

Force the Republicans to raise the salary of teachers.

Ban the AR-15, the weapon of choice for school mass murders.

There are individual rights and then there are states rights. The 2nd was always intended to be a state right until folks like NRA true believers stole the 2nd in order for their own political gain.

Conservatives only care about the 2nd Amendment – it is more important than the lives of children.

“Since a well regulated Militia is necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms in service of that Militia shall not be infringed.”

There, fixed that for all of us.
