Remember when most presidents had previously served in the military? Remember when most presidents acted like presidents? Remember when America was the shiny hero for the rest of the world to emulate?

Hosting for GE theater and being in your 70’s seemed to help, too.

There are reasons for this. The GOP, aided and abetted by FoxNews and the conservative media, has had an ongoing “meme” of “insiders” versus “outsiders.” The implication is that anyone who is a “Washington insider” cannot be trusted. Unfortunately, that means you are eliminating everyone with actual governing experience.

Some studies have pointed out that the last few presidents have been far more likely to be governors than senators, because senators (oh, those days of yore) had to compromise to get legislation through, which made them vulnerable to accusations of being “traitors” for actually collaborating with fellow citizens of different parties. The increasing polarization and media exacerbation of the polarization has made our governing system as we knew it untenable.

We have now reached the ultimate example of this in #45, where NO experience is mysteriously considered the best credential, which is something you wouldn’t have in ANY other job on the planet.

While research (including my own) supports that idea that, if you must choose, having competencies and capabilities are more important than experience, the best leaders have both. And #45 lacks both. Leadership? He runs a 20-person organization of family and cronies, not even a major company. Even George W. Bush had more leadership experience and capability than that — though not a lot more, since he was a three-peat failed CEO and was governor in a state where the governor was a figurehead.

Not as President, but Oprah would make one heck of a cabinet member.
