A number of chefs have gotten so upset about this very thing,
that some restaurants no longer allow food pictures,
or even ban cameras altogether.
I just read about some ultra-chic place in New York (not that I ever go to such places) where the waiters hand customers a long set of rules along with the menu.
Along with ignoring the effort the staff has put into making the food and the experience special,
the picture-takers are often posting public reviews of food they’ve let sit till it cools, wilts and congeals…
or even asking waiters to have dishes reheated, that were perfect when served, ruining delicate flavors and garnishes.
Strictly speaking, this is less of a geek thing and more of a generic millenial thing.
Oh, @SusanSunshine, I’ve been a food critic since I was 14, and I fully agree with the chefs and restaurants banning cameras. I don’t bother with pictures when I’m on the job, solely for the sake of the food.
I eat very fast (at least according to my family), but I HATE eating food that gets cold. Reheating it is not the same. I want to enjoy it the way it is meant to be eating – which is, in most cases, hot! Just because I eat fast does not mean I don’t taste/enjoy it!
I make chopped raw veggie meals. I don’t like salad. I started doing this before it became a thing. I don’t use salad dressing just oil and a protein substitute that i make in my food processor. I also learned that this was the thing to do, after I started. (Weird) Sometimes it looks good enough to photograph but I just shrug and eat it. I shun anything trendy.
no, can’t relate. I find myself a geek (work, tastes, etc) and even though is not a template you have to follow, and not everybody likes the same, can not say I find this geeky neither for me or for what I know about geekdom. How about, you may be a geek (or a normal person) if you think people taking photos of their food look like idiots, and actually nobody cares about those photos but themselves, as nobody gives a dam about what other people eat
Actually it is just people justifying having a mega-pixel camera on their phone by inventing reasons to use it. The same with the endless stream of selfies. Photography used to be expensive – film, camera, developing – but now it is cheap and easy. I’m sure there are people out there – you know who you are – who have tens of thousands of digital pictures stored that, someday, you will get around to sorting and deleting.
Taking pictures of your food till it gets cold? If they are that stupid and manic let them eat it cold. This I don’t find geek at all, more like manic expressive.

Nice restaurant, Scott; I presume that it’s one you dine at.

Looks like Carolina has a salad so it doesn’t matter if it’s cold

It also makes the wait longer for tables since people spend so much time on their phones it takes a lot longer to turn tables.

I’ve never understood the custom of taking pictures of your food. I have zero interest in what someone else is eating.

I would argue that this classifies you as a “hipster” rather than a “geek”
