FYI: The reference here is to the film “Sophie’s Choice”, in ’82 For her portrayal of Sophie (a Polish Jew), Meryl Streep won every possible award and demonstrated her amazing ability to play anyone convincingly.
If you haven’t seen it, you should.
GT connection: she performed many times at the Yale Repertory Theater (while studying at Yale Drama School) in the early 70’s. GT probably saw her there. (I did, too; she was obviously something special, even then.)
