It’s never a total shutdown. The military would still be active (and maybe even paying its bills). The Secret Service would still be active and running up bills at Trump’s hotels. The Federal Reserve Bank would not stop doing business with the big financial institutions.
And there’s no way that Trump would stop his tweeting.
For that matter, if Congress itself actually shut down, then they’d never again be able to “open up” the government.
Mark Twain was right; “No One’s Life, Liberty, Or Property Is Safe When The Legislature Is In Session!” And so was Will Rogers; “If ‘Pro’ and ‘Con’ are opposites, does that make ‘Congress’ the opposite of ‘Progress’?”
Yes, it’s a good thing when federal employees miss a few paychecks and poor children don’t get to eat because of no food stamps. Of course, they may get the money retroactively.
I wouldn’t mind shutting down the government if Trump went with it. In this case, however, doesn’t that just give him a clearer path to the dictatorship he’s working toward?
Don’t worry, the great negotiator has already caved and taken out the opposition to Obamacare, and his Wall payments. Trump shows once again, he is a terrible negotiator, a weak politician and a grossly incompetent president. It has been 100 days, and it doesn’t look like Trump is the one to make ANYTHING great. He can’t even make his golf game great again, how is he going to do so for America?

Well, there’s a point at the White House, and half of Congress, but a shutdown always costs several billion dollars, so there IS a down side.

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. And Stahler never learns.

Oh, no! Does that mean I won’t be getting my social security check?

You might see some downsides if the government actually shuts down. Maybe people will wake up and see that the republicans are totally insane.
