I once heard the outrageous pay levels of corporate CEOs explained to me like this: Say you’re on the board of directors of a large company, you’re interviewing candidates for your next CEO, and you ask them what kind of salary they’re expecting. The 1st guy says “a million dollars”; the 2nd says “2 million”. You want the best guy, right? And the 2nd one is apparently twice as good as the first, using the only measuring stick that ever matters to capitalists.
