Don’t like the name of that candy. Change it.

    Josh, why?

“hoar” (“white,” “light-colored,” as in “hoarfrost”) and “hune” a word of unknown origin designating a class of herbs or plants.

So what if it sounds like something else? The plant it comes from has been called that for generations.

What I wouldn’t give to have a candy shop like this around here! I haven’t had decent hoarhound candy in a good 33 years! I was in the 4th grade and had gotten to try a piece. The class was divided into two reading groups and the other group had been reading a story that mentioned the candy and then one of the kids brought in some of the candy. And the teacher had mistakenly called my group up for a piece but then the kid corrected her that it was for his group. He had some left over and gave me a piece, though. I saw hoarhound at a local drug store but it wasn’t all that great. The stuff I had back then was better.

Necco Waffers and Hoarhound drops in one comic strip! Necco waffers are still going strong, but real hoarhound drops are hard to come by.

How does he sleep at night Katy? In the period-appropriate way: by drinking a pitcher of laudanum…

One of the best candy places I’ve found is the Nifty Nut House in Wichita, KS. niftynuthouse.com

I looked up “Circus Peanut” (never had one myself). Did you know they are banana flavored? I thought they would be peanut butter at least.

I sing in three choirs and use horehound as a throat soother prior to rehearsals and performances. And I just saw some circus peanuts in an old-timey hardware store yesterday. I liked them, but am not willing to waste Weight Watchers points on them when I can have wine instead.

The heavy, dark, medicinal taste of horehound drops is a taste I developed years ago. I’d play a game of eating some in front of friends and apologizing for not offering any because it is such an acquired taste and very few people like it on first try. There would always be someone to insist, and I would smile as he (always he) would pop one in, take one suck, then spit it out. Oddly enough, this is how I react to beer.
