The electoral collage should have been done away with the day the telegraph was invented. It is an anti-democratic anachronism.

There HAS to be a better way…something more in-line with 21st century thinking.

Time to get a new one!At the time, it was a (sort of) reasonable compromise to make sure different states got their different concerns represented — which, unfortunately, mostly meant “slave owning states wanted more power relative to their size of voting citizens.”Now — no point. I’ve seen some people say “do you want elections decided by California, New York, Texas, and Florida?” to which I say, that IS the problem with the Electoral College. The vote of a farmer in Montana has triple the value of my vote in Massachusetts, and that is clearly in conflict with the “one man, one vote” principle. For some time now, we have been becoming more urban and more diversified. The Republican solution to that is apparently “disenfranchise those people.” I prefer a democratic (lower-case d) solution.

After a few more minority rule elections the apathetic non-voters may notice that something is amiss and try complaining to the people that they believe are “representing” them.

We want the electoral college to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority. What is to protect the majority from the tyranny of the minority? When they sweep the election with a minority vote by a minority of people, only 20% of the people even want this. Now they are pretending they have a mandate and everyone has to get along. Sorry, you have already burned through all my good will. This cheater does not deserve to be in the White house and does not represent the majority of the people. He represents the majority of the racists.

The reason and basis for the electoral college is just as relevant and true today as in 1787.//As long as we have 50 states with borders and districts being governed, and a population that moves around freely, changing the numbers of voters in any district, there needs to be a “handicap” system to ensure fairness so that the coastal cities with huge populations are not represented while the voters in the small states between the coasts would be Unrepresented.//The ten-year schedule of census recounts keeps the electoral numbers up to date, giving more equal value to votes from the less populated districts. Handicapping is used in other venues, sports, etc. without all this wailing and crying by the loser side. The system also keeps our Republic safer from the Mob Rule of pure democracy types of governing. Mob Rule is easily seen to be bad for the majority and worse for the minority.//Keep the Electoral College.

If the majority of people wanted to get rid of the electoral college and gerrymandering this could be accomplished by temporarily becoming a single party for the next two elections. If all independents/unaffiliated/Democrats registered as Republicans and selected their issues and candidates in the primaries and general elections and overturned the electoral collge and gerrymandering and maybe even adopted a ranked priority voting system so everyone is actually represented. Only about 1/4 of the voters are Republicans; about 1/3 are Democrats and the majority are independent/unaffiliated. It could work if enough people cared about uniting their country …

If Trump had won the popular vote but lost by the electoral votes would these people screaming for a change be as upset and demand change?

Dictators and strongmen all look a like no matter what side of the polictical spectrum they claim to be on. They are their own political spectrum because it is not by vote of the people but by suppression of people rights and freedoms they remain in power.
