He was raising his hands because I told him to, but he was black so the policy is still to shoot just in case. If you do what you are told and are white, chances are you won’t be killed. That is the definition of white privilege.

Committing crimes and getting cot are two different things. Also, who decides what’s a crime?

The problem now is that every shooting is considered to be unlawful.Rioting and looting isn’t the answer; it just inflames things more and gives racists a reason to dig in their heels.Yes, I know that many of those acting violently are coming from outside of the area.-The media needs to be engaged to stop amping up the tension. Headlines are worded to inflame. But since profits win over truth, I don’t have much hope there.

Sorry, but with all the guns out there, guns have to be careful, BUT! With way too many police shootings, and it ain’t all against blacks (like a lady in Portland, OR with a bottle of booze shot 9 times by panicked cops) but the emphasis on lethal, as opposed to non-lethal solutions to arrest seems to be prevalent in too many departments. BTW: my experience was that when it came out cops in our southern states, if you were out of state, or military, you were always screwed!!

Uh, also it’s with the guns out there COPS have to be careful, danged “autocorrect” again!!!!!!!.

wattslinda: The incident I was speaking of was down around Broadway, may have been 5 or 6 years ago, several cops were involved, there was a lot of flap, and Portland PD did some “reorganizing” of their training after that. Another case, over by Beaverton was an example of the “other way”. A gal was shot while trying to run down and kill the police with her car. The flap was a public who couldn’t understand how a black woman with a 4,000 pound car could be as, or more, dangerous than an ounce or so of bullet. Cars killing are NOT always accidents!!

Gee, once we had a Mr. Rogers who tried to bring people together. Now we’ve got one working as hard as possible to keep us all at each other’s throats.

It helps to know a few statistics, folks.According to FBI numbers (I found the site), 83% of whites are murdered by whites; 90% of blacks are murdered by blacks. The more relevant number is murder rate by race. FBI numbers show that if you add white and black murders together (and ignore other and unknown), you get 5,496 murders in 2013. Of the number, 55% are of whites (3,005), and 45% are of blacks (2,491), so not that far apart. BUT THERE ARE NEARLY SIX TIMES AS MANY WHITE PEOPLE!According to this page on Wikipedia, in 2010 (not quite the same year, but near enough in terms of order of magnitude), the US had 223,553,265 whites (72.3% of the population) and 38,929,319 blacks (12.6% of the population). That means that black people are getting murdered at some five times the rate of white people. And when you talk about killings by police – which as someone noted is one of the key points of Black Lives Matter – there’s no contest. And here are my sources:FBI data:https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2013/crime-in-the-u.s.-2013/offenses-known-to-law-enforcement/expanded-homicide/expanded_homicide_data_table_6_murder_race_and_sex_of_vicitm_by_race_and_sex_of_offender_2013.xlsDemographics:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demography_of_the_United_States

Mark Twain saw it and wrote about it in the 1860s. He talks (in newspaper columns) about police routinely beating anyone they pick up, so they’ll look worse in court. He talks about the commission that’s supposed to look into crimes committed by the police, and notes that the Chief is on the commission, and will always veto any punishment for one of his own.
