Language morphs fairly rapidly and words become archaic in a generation or two … even worse when you try to put today’s context on a 240 year old document or worse something centuries older.
Ramirez is mimicking patriotism while mocking the US, people. “Thy” because he’s talking about the proof of the US being our bombs. @nikilpat, you talked about Ramirez occasionally not being negative. Today is not that day.
The use of “thee” however? I’m stumped. That may just be stupidity on Ramirez’ part.
Looked up keyes original manuscript.“The bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night, that our flag was still there.”Ramirez seems to have gotten even this simple thing wrong.
“Donald J. Trump’s presidential campaign committee is violating black-letter federal law by sending campaign fundraising emails to foreign nationals,” Paul S. Ryan, deputy executive director of the Washington-based Campaign Legal Center, wrote in a statement announcing the complaint. “It is a no-brainer that it violates the law to send fundraising emails to members of a foreign government on their official foreign government email accounts, and yet, that’s exactly what Trump has done repeatedly.”
Americans need to have a clear understanding of the shrapnel that rains down from those bombs, or the high explosives blowing people to pieces from those rockets red glare. Sorry, but those lines are what bother me about the national anthem, and American’s lack of understanding of what they mean.
It also sums up why I, my son, and so many combat veterans with PTSD find the Fourth of July, and those morons shooting off fireworks and explosives for a week keep us, and our dogs and cats, totally tense this time of year.
When it comes to the fear of “terrorism”, and well mosquitos, rampant in American right-wing mostly, politics, that “home of the brave”, might also to a large degree deserve a rewrite.
Indeed it is still there. However, this verse, the one we all sing, ends in a question: “O say , does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave, O’er the land of the free, And the home of the brave?” At the end of the third verse, it still waves—by the grace of God, who preserves us a nation.
I think it’s just a typo. One would have hoped that it would have been properly edited — or if it is intended to have been a statement of some kind that he would have made his intent more plain.
To those who find remembering our Revolution for Independence “old”, that old gave us the freedoms which you lefties decry. A little gratitude is in order but from leftists I don’t expect any, sadly.
It’s not as confusing as you make it out to be. “The” is spelled the same regardless of its pronunciation. And the pronunciation isn’t random either. It’s pronounced “thee” when it precedes a vowel sound. It’s pronounced “thuh” when it precedes a consonant. “‘Thuh’ heavens and ‘thee’ earth”, for example. If Ramirez were spelling phonetically, it’d be “thuh night”. But unless you’re struggling with English as a Second Language, you should know to spell it as “the” in both cases.

Democrats are doing their best to get rid of it. Sigh.

Once a year, Mr. Ramirez puts out a cartoon that is not grotesquely and bizarrely negative. Some years, we get a bonus; he does it twice.

I checked a dozen sites, and they (thy) all say “the bombs”, not “thy bombs”, which wouldn’t really work in the context anyway.

Yeah, well, around here the 4th is like a war zone. I wish everyone would tone it down a little.

To one party, this country is summed up by two things. War, and a flag. It’s pretty simplistic. And it’s not the Democrats.

So much negativity in today’s comments… How about just “Happy 240th birthday, U.S.A.!!”.
