When a teen, my wife was being lectured by her Mom. When her Mom told her to “wipe that grin” off her face, she passed her hand across her face and lost the grin. It was truly a kid thing, but her Mom was not amused and quickly slapped her. Lesson learned….a very hard lesson.

Elly’s standard operating procedures are: shoot the messenger, deny habeas corpus, presume guilt until proven innocent (except that a chance to prove innocence is not allowed), and sometimes all of the above.

A sure way to change subject of “clean up the mess”, to eye rolling expressions. When accused always change the subject.

The minute you object to something that he does, he has something that will bother you and will use it ad nauseam.

He got the expression from her – she got the attitude from her mother or father.

What can be done about it? The parent can break the cycle by not reacting. So what if someone rolls their eyes at you?

That’s the problem – kids are not allowed to have any emotions and then we wonder why so many adults struggle with emotion. Stop personalizing children’s negative emotions. It only fuels them.
