The ACLU sued the town Of Enfield, Ct for having graduation in a church where a cross was visible. One student and two parents complained. Four other area high schools use this same church.

Most of what I could google was from the ACLU, but as soon as the library opens I will find the defendants side.

BRIAN I hope that will start you on your search to be uncivil and deny liberty like the ACLU. Wait a second, didn’t a lot of the protesters of an unpopular war and the civil rights movement have the initials Rev. before their names? I thought you liberals hated religion.

Now if he could imitate Daisy Duke, that would be something!!

Duke might get Daisy’s way of talking right, but if he ever wore a pair of her cutoffs, I could never look at another set of Daisy Dukes without getting violently ill.

Enfield decided just this year to hold its high-school commencements at a “megachurch” whose chapel is loaded with Christian messages, including a banner, saying “Jesus Christ Is Lord”, under which the students would receive their diplomas. A commencement was held there in 2007 because of temporary problems with the athletic fields.

As Common Dreams further describes, “First Cathedral is festooned with Christian iconography, and the stage where students receive diploma packets is surrounded by a 25-foot-tall cross, banners reading ‘Jesus Christ Is Lord’ and ‘I am GOD’ and seven symbols representing Jesus. The facade of the church features five large Christian crosses and another large cross towers over its roof. The church’s lobby contains a fountain in the shape of a cross, surrounded by a frame in the shape of a tomb. Large-screen televisions throughout the sanctuary display the message, ‘This is God’s House Where Jesus Christ Is Lord,’ while students and guests wait for the ceremony to begin” (“ACLU And Americans United File Lawsuit Over Public School Graduations At Church: Commencement Ceremonies In Sectarian Facility Violate Students’ Rights”).

Each school has a gymnasium suitable for its commencement, and there are secular auditoria available for renting, but Enfield was encouraged by right-wing, pro-“Christian” organizations to rent the Baptist church: “The Family Institute of Connecticut (FIC), that state’s largest and best known pro-life, pro-marriage family organization, persuaded the Enfield (Connecticut) Board of Education this week, to defy a legal threat from the ACLU and send graduation ceremonies back to First Cathedral, a church facility…. Because of the intervention by FIC, and because the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) which has offered free legal representation to the Town of Enfield, should the ACLU should carry out its threat to sue the town, things may be changing!” (“School board defies ACLU: Will hold graduation ceremonies in church”).

Indeed, Enfield “REVERSED a previous decision NOT to hold commencement ceremonies at The First Cathedral, a Baptist megachurch” (“ACLU sues school district to stop graduation at Conn. church”) (emphasis mine).

The A.C.L.U. sued Enfield only after it & some Enfield students had requested, in November, that Enfield not rent the church & after Enfield refused to alter its plans in mediation.

Remember: When thinking of a public function being held in a religious venue, think of how you would feel if your daughter were graduating under the smiling visage of the Devil, because town had rented the Satanist church.

Alternately, how would you like your son’s commencement held in an auditorium laden with large-screen televisions pronouncing “THERE IS NO GOD”?

If you would object to either of those venues for a public, community gathering, then you agree with the A.C.L.U., and you are protecting liberty.

PErhaps he can channel king Raygun.

“go to some political forum..” Uh, this is Doonsebury, it’s not written for kids; the political stuff fits here.

Lew, it seems you stretched a few facts, ie: The school could have simply moved the graduation and would have had no need to hire counsel. The fight was their choice, helped by the fact that they were offered free legal assistance themselves, thus refuting your point about ruining their budget.

Obviously, Christians would have raised…well, not hell, but whatever Christians raise when they’re ticked off…if the school held any function in a Satan worshipper’s facility, as Brian mentioned, but I bet some would have caused almost as much trouble if the ceremony was held in a mosque or synagogue.

This is indeed a political forum for all readers of Doonesbury, but it will quickly regress to a playroom for kiddies if its posters start vying with GT’s satirical drawings of SP.

Doctored photos of a pit bull with lipstick, for example, may well express the humor of a ten-year-old reading Mad Comics, but they belong on a platform with Palin or Limbaugh, not in a forum of Doonesbury readers used to GT’s witty images.

Ps. @ Mike: The Trudeau-haters, as you say, are witless exhibitionists. But do we see any more wit in those who post photographic images to exhibit their mockery of SP or Duke or of GT’s cartoons generally?

My apologies to all for the length of my remark in reply to Lew’s distorting disparagement of the A.C.L.U. I thought it important to use facts & reason eventhough the topic, a high-school’s commencement, had no relation to this week’s Doonesburys.

I suspect, also, that the off-topic discussions are more likely when Doonesbury is entertaining but, say, less provoking. Duke is a sleaze-bag; we all agree. That he would work for a sleazy company like B.P. also does not surprise. (His firm’s other client is the dictator of Berzerkistan, after all.) B.P.’s attempt to improve its image by hiring a Mississippian as new C.E.O. is risible & easily ridiculed w/out provoking the Big Oil apologists here. For those & more reasons, the discussion may wander.

Thus, in that vein, I shall reply to one more inaccuracy of Lew’s from yesterday: Lew, both Republicans & Democrats share responsibility for the Vietnam War. America began losing soldiers there under Dwight Eisenhower and did not stop losing them until after the resignation of Richard Nixon, 36 years ago this weekend—what wonderful memories I have of THAT event.
