Carter was a weak fool and it took electing Reagan to get the Iranian hostages released. At least Carter didn’t pay the hostage takers. Obama’s “argument” for not tying the current hostages to the trade deal is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. “If we asked for the detainees, Iran would have known they were important and they might have asked for additional concessions.” As if there were anything left for Iran to demand other than death to the Great Satan.

Oh, my, Stan, you really believe that, don’t you? Reagan undercut the negotiations in Tehran just the way Nixon torpedoed the peace settlement with Hanoi — never mind how many must die, just so long as the GOP gets their man in the White House..Traitors

Just like the DEA acts as a de facto price support for drug dealers, the GOP acts tirelessly to keep up the value of the hostage standard.

I wish I could live in LaLa Land with the republicans, but reality is just too inviting. Facts are a terrible thing to waste.

Carter presided over double digit inflation, interest rates, and unemployment. This is what killed his re-election chances.

This has been a terrible mistake by Obama. Imagine returning some of Iran’s own money to Iran. That’s reprehensible. If the US confiscates another nation’s money because we control SWIFT, that money becomes ours, and it’s wrong to give a penny of it back..Besides, as Bush, jr’s top experts explained to anyone who will listen to real experts, Saddam, the Iranian Ayatollahs, al-Qaeda, and the DA (formerly the Da3sh in Arabic or ISIS in English) are all BSFs and coreligionists. So the Iran-Iraq war was like the Nazi-Japanese War where the US was attacked from the west by Japan and from the east by the Nazis and almost lost because of appeasement by Chamberlain..The Iran-Iraq was was similar: Iran and Saddam’s Iraq both waged war together on the US. Both sent the 9/11 hijackers, who included Iraqis, Iranians, and Afghanistans all sent by their governments, plus Pakistanis whose government tried unsuccessfully to stop them. They are all from the same violent, terrorist sect of Islam, unlike the peaceful sect of the US’s BFF the Saudis, who practice Wahabbi Islam, the vegetarian version of Islam that believes in Gandhian non-violence. In fact, 15 Saudis were martyred trying to stop those Iraqi, Iranian, and Afghani terrorists who destroyed the World Trade Center and then returned to heroes’ welcomes in their home countries..Plus, it took the US 50 tonnes of pure uranium oxide to build a nuclear bomb, but Iran has a massive arsenal of bombs almost ready to go, and did this with only about 6 tonnes of uranium, so their nuclear research has far surpassed that of the US, and they’ll clearly have a massive nuclear arsenal if we don’t immediately nuke all of Iran back to Trinitite!

Ok, let’s clear up some confusion. The U.S. is not paying money to Iran. The $100 billion belongs to Iranians, but has been frozen by the diplomatic efforts of the Obama administration. Only someone who gets their information from right wing “entertainers” would think otherwise. If the negotiations fell apart, China & Russia would have dropped out of the sanctions agreement. Iran wouldn’t get the full $100 billion but, more than half of the amount is controlled by those countries. Iran would get the money & be able to sell oil to China.I think it’s fair criticism to ask why release of Americans hasn’t been facilitated yet.

Another ignorant Teapublican cartoon. How dare you insinuate that the President doesn’t care about the hostages. And please tell me how bombing Iran would keep those same hostages alive.

i think sky rocketing interest rates might also have played a small part… 24% for a home mortgage was a little steep in 1980.

Reagan just gave Iran weapons, and used the funds to slaughter people in Nicaragua, to sustain a Fascist regime. In spite of the fact that law passed by Congress, and his own Executive Orders, made his actions totally illegal, and treason.

It was also Carter who got the release going, but Reagan’s people who got Iran to hold off on the release until a few minutes after his inauguration, so he could claim the credit for their release. Yet another act of treason by NOrth and other Reagan folks, following his orders. (Well, Cheney and Rumsfeld were there too.)
