Actually, we did have an orthopedic surgeon here in town who was an avid motorcyclist. One evening he went to a neighborhood part where he overindulged, then didn’t wear his helmet as he rode his cycle home. He drove too close to a street sign and hit his head on the sign. He did not survive. So I guess this proves your point.
From what I have observed over the years, motorcycle riding is a form of insanity with no cure. I came to this realization after talking to a motorcycle officer who told me of the time that he had to lay down his bike and the road burn that he had for the length of the outside of his right leg. The scab had to be removed daily, entailing the liberal consumption of whiskey prior to this procedure. It was after this event did he become a motorcycle officer.
I haven’t been this stressed out since my own dad was in the hospital five years ago due to sudden cardiac arrest. Good news, he’s better than ever, but it was a scary day when it happen.
I rode motorcycles for about 35 years, quitting in my mid-sixties when I realized that I was slowing down and the bike wasn’t.
Yes, they’re not as safe as, for instance, a baby buggy, but the vast majority of accidents happen to folks who never actually learn how to ride. And there’s a lot of folks like that out there wobbling around.
Just because you know how to ride a bicycle, you don’t know how to ride a motorcycle unless you’re taught – safe and proper riding requires skills both unique to motorcycling, and entirely non-instinctive. If you’re interested in riding, for everyone’s sake, take a motorcycle safety class. Don’t volunteer to become a statistic.
As a nurse working in Singapore, this really hits home as to how one of my own patient’s significant other might feel when I tell them that they can go ahead and see the patient… and I feel it in the first person’s shoes now.
lots of our orthopods are bikers… Actually quite a lot of our anaesthetists and general surgeons are too. motorbikes are quite popular at my hospital.
I’m a biker too!
Interesting injuries Phil has… No external fixation on the pelvis; a broken leg that is still plastered full length, so they haven’t pinned or plated it… So what urgent operation did they perform? Something on his head?
Ok, I’m being a theatre-bore…
Hope his head injuries are minor. How about a nice bedside wedding?
Of course she should go first! That wouldn’t even be a question on my lips if that was my man laying in there. My reaction to the doctor’s instructions of 1 at a time would have been, “Okay, thanks. Everyone, I’ll be back out in due time then you guys can fight over who goes next.”

Like a sitcom, this is where it turns from silly to serious. At times, very serious.

It looks now as though Phil has more than leg and pelvis injuries. His head injury could be very serious!
