When I was first married, I brought home a dozen roses and I got a screaming fit from the spouse about how she was allergic to roses. Guess who gets not flowers.

When my husband and I were dating, at the end of the first week he bought me a “wood rose” (looked, felt & smelled like a real rose, but was fake) that was yellow and red. Week 2 he bought me a red one. Week 3 he bought me a white one. Week 4…he bought me a bouquet of REAL yellow roses (he didn’t know that I despise the color yellow with every fiber of my being, so I let it pass). I still have the “wood roses”, and we’ve been married for almost 30 years. (Incidentally, for our first Valentine’s Day, he bought me a .22 rifle; everyone else thought it was terrible, but I’d always wanted to learn how to shoot, so I was thrilled.)

Wood roses grow in Hawaii. They are not artificial. When I was in high school in Hawaii, my folks used to periodically send boxes of an arrangement of wood roses, anthuriums and bird of paradise flowers to my Grandmothers in the redwood empire.

I’m allergic to pretty much all flowers, so my thoughtful daughters-in-law used artificial flowers for their weddings. I still have some of them after 9 years.

I buy my wife flowers twice a year. Valentine’s day and her birthday. I’d do it more often but one of our cats loves to eat the flowers and then throw up, which she complains about.

I got my wife a porcelainized red rose 20+ years ago, with gold leaf on the stem and leaves. Still has thorns on it.

my list of allergies is long, but not deep, so I can suffer the sweet smell of nice flowers, or a quick scratch on the head of a nice dog, so long as I don’t linger too long, and wash my hands quickly.
