More likely he recorded HIMSELF, and then played it over and over. He knows that Mom & Dad aren’t so dim as to not catch on if he suddenly starts sounding like Herb Alpert.
My daughter had started recording some of her violin practices so that she could hear it and see where she needs work. This morning I said to her, “I’m not so sure you should be recording your practices.” When she asked why, I showed her this. Her face was beyond priceless! She thought it was hilarious.
Originally the joke was the uncle gave him a trumpet for his birthday, but now it has changed into the idea that the parents are demanding Michael get involved in an extracurricular activity as he does nothing but watch TV.
If he managed to get the piece to the point where he could record himself, then it means he has practiced.-———-Not quite, How.Look at the last panel – those creaky notes aren’t from “Al Hirt’s Greatest Hits.” Michael practiced the piece once, recorded the creaky, bad rehearsal, and just plays it back.Of course, when Mom and Dad realize he’s hitting the same wrong note over and over, he’s going to get caught.(None of us are as smart as we think we are.)
Always loved the solid silver Selmer flute my uncle brought our one Thanksgiving in 1947. Was able to play notes right away & it became mine that Christmas. Years of practice was a joy until I heard Lester Flagg & Scruggs recording. Then it was on to tenor & 5 string banjos. But played flute classical music & exercises on the banjos. Never forced to practice.Any song I heard I could play on either flute or banjo by the time I was in college. Of course this was the middle 50’s and banjos became cool. Kept me out of trouble.
A woman started playing horn after 15 years not playing, and three weeks of practice and was able to join our community band. If you miss playing, get an instrument and start back again. Local community or school bands might be able to get you a loaner to test play while getting back your embrasure.
I was wrong, Michael does more than watch TV. He is seen in the last panel reading comic books! Still, it makes sense that his parents want him to get into broader interests.
I love how she allows herself to show the struggle of giving up on something unpleasant, both in the strip and in her comments. It’s so very human- most of us have done it in one or another endeavour in life (school, some facet of work, a relationship, an instrument). Sad, but true!

Reminds me of that “Family Guy” bit where Peter was pretending to play an electric piano and some guy thought he was actually doing it.

Now that few people use cassette tape recorders, how does one make a live recording of oneself?

Whose idea was it anyway?-———-Michael’s.If the parents pay for the horn, and Elly’s brother gives him lessons, he should practice.

Wouldn’t work at my house….I’d catch onto that trick soon enough. Mom radar.

Michael still has to work on this — when the piece is over, he has to hit rewind, then play again. And again. And again.
