When I was 16 I was supposed to get married. I was NOT pregnant. Mom had a boyfriend that was icky, so I was trying to get away from that situation. 2 hours before the ceremony reality kicked in & I said no. I had only known the guy for a few weeks. I went back to my boyfriend that I had dated for 6 months prior to this guy. A week later he shows with his new wife! He’s known her for 5 days. Fast forward a couple of years and I’m at the PX and overhear a guy say his name. Same name as the creep I almost married. Apparently due to the same name this guy got a lot of the heat the one that I thankfully let slip away got into. What’s bizarre is my ex was a tall white guy from OK & the poor dude was 5’9"ish black guy from NY. In other words NOTHING in common except the name.

howtheduck: At least in Canada – only one insurance company to send the bill to. Cuts down on staff (and expenses) nicely. Now the nurse can do nursing rather than double as secretary, insurance company searcher, appointment manager, etc. Lynn was practically grown before BC came under this plan.
Typical Ted. What a loser and his poor secretary/wife is in for an awakening. (although) she’s worked for him, so she should be aware of his frailties. Maybe it’s just the lure of getting married (to anyone).
Here again was potential for some really fun story telling. I wanted to show Ted and his secretary, I wanted to delve into this new relationship, but the restricted space I had to work in held me back. The thing about a daily comic strip is I had to focus on the central characters as much as possible, or I would lose them to other characters who might take the spotlight. There are a number of sit-coms which resulted in separate stories: “Frasier” comes to mind, a spinoff from “Cheers.” (Such great writing in these!)
In television, they have the freedom to write for a number of characters; to delve into their lives and personalities, but with static lines and panels, we are limited to showing small glimpses of the lives of the secondary characters around them.
@howtheduckSeriously? I searched through the archives on Lynn’s website. There were a few strips when Irene and Ted returned from the honeymoon. There were a couple of strips the following year where Ted admitted to John he was running around on her. And about two years from the original of this strip were the ones where (SPOILER ALERT) Ted tells John she left him.
