happened to me. I wound up out in the middle of the street on my back with traffic coming at me from both directions. Since there was a police car in the vicinity, everyone was driving slow. The police witnessed the event. The driver lost his license (third infraction) and his insurance company had to buy me a new front wheel ($1000).
I’ve never been doored on a bicycle, though I have come close several times; but I learned to take the driving lane as needed, and ride far enough out to avoid that.
I DID nearly take someone’s door off when I was learning to drive a school bus. No room to swerve, so I tested the brakes. Fortunately, I wasn’t going very fast, and more fortunately the brakes worked… My instructor nearly had a heart attack, though.
From the lyrics to Weird Al Yankovic’s “Traffic Jam”::There’s a yuppie on a cellular phoneI’m gonna puke if I here any moreThere’s a motorcycle zoomin’ by meWatch what happens when I open my door
I’ve never been doored either, but I did run my bike into the side of a moving vehicle once, to roughly the same result. Lucky for me, I came out of it mostly unscathed; just some road rash and a little shellshocked, so to speak. But as it happened the guy driving the vehicle I ran into was a nurse and knew what to do had I been more seriously injured. My bike was the only thing most seriously injured in that event (it never was quite the same afterwards).

Doors opening on panel vans do have an ominous reputation.

Thank you “Rails to Trails”, that is not a worry for me. I hate riding in traffic but there are two beautiful trails < half mile from me.
