“I am starting to wonder if the underlying reason for the dismal performance, nay the utter and complete incompetence by the Secret Service staff is not a clandestine desire for the President to be assassinated.”-Speaking as a Republican I can say that I see no evidence of this. The assassination of the President would be a blow to our National Security and might even damage our trust in our political system. No reasonable Republican would consider that a benefit, even before considering that it would place a man as unqualified for the presidency as Joe Biden to the office.-I would guess that most Republicans, like myself, do not have much against the President on a personal level. We want to see his ideas discredited and his party defeated, but the idea of committing violence against his person is a thought that doesn’t even occur to me, or appear in anything I have heard or read (except from those on the left worried about the possibility).
It appears Tom is aware of what’s in the “basement portions” of that structure at 1600 Pennsylvannia Ave. While it appeared protocols failed, what about when Reagan was shot, Ford shot at, twice, and further “goodies”, but when Republicans appointed the AG and Secret Service dudes (later converted to Civil Service, so they stayed on after they left) it was “no problemo”, and definitely NOT a Republican administrations’ fault, right?
BTW in the guy in the elevator story, the guy was a CONTRACTOR SECURITY OFFICER, by a private company, and had a criminal record, like most of Reagan’s staff after Iran-Contra, but did he also get a court reversal like they did from Reagan appointed judges?
This whole bit isn’t an attack on Secret Service, rather, a direct attack on the Administration, just like every other “newsworthy” story at this near election period.
I’m sure they would rather save him for impeachment. In any case, I know plenty of people who act like the President killed their dog, they despise him so much.

Failure is constantly rewarded in politics: most incumbent members of Congress are re-elected, after all!

Liberals will still be blaming Bush/Cheney after they’re both dead. It is like a nervous tic.
