If I were still in school, I couldn’t agree more with Holly and Alix. Also, their next-door neighbor cousins Max and Lucy have it easy!

I used to enjoy the summer reading lists, the chores not so much.

@Holly
If I were you… I get out the window now, down to the garden and make for… wherever.

Probably because Mom also worked in the school system, my sister and I had neither summer chores nor summer reading lists…

We never had summer reading lists….but had to work everyday in my parent’s store.

I never heard of “Summer reading lists” or “packets” until several years ago. We knew how to behave in school. When we did get too rowdy, we knew to shut up when the teacher lost his/her temper. Then the teacher was able to teach DURING school time. Our summers were filled with swimming or fishing in the river or at the pond, bike riding, playing games with other neighborhood kids, etc., not school work.

My sisters and I didn’t have reading lists, but we always participated in the library’s summer reading program.

When I was a kid sun came up and we got up. I said this several times. Mom was not illiterate just considered reading waste of time she would not read nor did I know there was a library outside of school time. During summer time in big city sister and I rode bikes or if too hot stayed inside with window a/c. Dad strung a rope swing on elm tree and I do have fun on the swing.When I married and lived in small town I have my children go to small library for summer reading programs and let them have fun. My two are adults my daughter likes to read my son does not. For me when no on-line class work pleasure reading.

I remember the summer after graduating from high school. My mom didn’t want me to go to work until the fall.. She said this would be my last easy summer as responsibilities would go on for a long time. What a sweetheart!

My only summer reading was comic books. Ironically, by the time I was in highschool I was way above grade level.

Kids need summertime to play. This reading-list and other stuff is a bunch of crap.

We never heard of anything like summer reading lists but my girlfriend and I would go to the library and each check out 10 books. We’d read them and trade off before returning them and checking out more.
What? Me worried ? almost 10 years ago
I don’t remember any reading lists (50’s-mid 60’s) ! The only over the summer project and that was after 9th grade and that was to collect bugs for 10th grade biology !
