Holly: I think you owe me money.
Alix: Since when?
Holly: Well, I'm OUT of money and you HAVE money, so you must OWE me money.
Alix: Nice try.
Holly: It's the law of physics or something!!
1after909, I’m glad you said it so I didn’t have to. Sorry people, but what Holly said is exactly this, also known as redistribution of wealth. One person works hard and earns the money but through their taxes a lot is given to people who don’t work to earn it. Is this fair or ethical? Shouldn’t the money belong to the one who worked to earn it?
Tell Holly you’re not willing to redistribute your wealth Alix.
Holly is not far off in attributing her idea to laws of physics. The laws of thermodynamics say that there is a certain amount of energy (which cannot be created or destroyed) that will level out as it flows from where it is to where it is not. She is simply suggesting that money should act in the same way. In this, she is echoing the “from each according to his ability to each according to his need” law of economics promoted by Karl Marx. How that “law” is or isn’t being applied in which countries, I will leave entirely up to the differing opinions of the various readers.
Instead of hoarding your money, you should be redistributing it as you choose to help those who truly need it. Then there’s less for the deadbeats who think the world owes them a living just for existing.
Why do we assume that every poor person is so because they don’t want to work? Lots of people work their tails off every day and still cannot make ends meet for reasons outside their control. And many of them are smarter than my millionaire boss. They just have less access. (Boy, Jan stepped into this one.)
Alix is being smart about her money. When she gets high enough she should start a bank account. Where as Holly spends hers when she gets it.
Now what I’m disappointed in about all that cooking what the results where.
Before Obama was elected, he said he wanted to redistribute the wealth.I give to what charities I want to give to. Do I need a government to tell me what to give to?Perhaps I feel that “The Save Two Tailed Raccoons Society” is not my charity of choice? Perhaps I feel a student’s PHD in Lower Mongolian Language is not a priority for my tax dollar? You might feel that the Biggest and Baddest Bomb” is not worthy of your hard earned dollar.
Or MAYBE the strip is just sayig that sometimes big sisters try to trick or guilt little sisters into doing silly stuff, like giving them money. Geez, people. You folks could make dust into a political statement.
And there are people on welfare who think they HAVE to have a big screen TV or so, video games and even a large pet, when they are not working even for their own food or housing. I like to CHOOSE who receives any charity I can afford AND how it gets spent. But I’m a mean and practical person. And I’m glad that Holly isn’t able to bamboozle Alix!
Then theres an unfortunate group of ppl who, through no fault of thier own, just don’t have the talent or intelligence to get out of thier situation, no matter how many jobs they work.
I’m seeing all these comments about people upset that their tax dollars are going to those less fortunate than them. I for one am sick and tired of paying taxes that then go to bailouts, rebates, refunds, tax cuts, grants, etc for those who make way more than I do!
mrssacksfan, it might surprise you to know that conservatives are more generous with their money than the redistribution of wealth crowd. The difference is deciding for ourselves whom we want to be generous with. As for helping build houses, liberals (for want of a better word) don’t have a monopoly on helping others.
And yes, even I who try to stay apolitical in all but the editorial cartoons, thought of Marx’s most quoted phrase “from each according to their abilities, to each according to their needs”.

Wow. Trying to turn an innocent comic strip into a political statement, way to go man. Way to go.

Alix is too smart for that, Holly.
I’m with jmw1122. Can’t we enjoy the comics without somebody pushing their political views? There are other comics for that.

Jeepers. I can tell which readers thought it was a terrible thing when Alix and Holly helped the homeless family last year.
And in other news – my kids pull this sort of stuff on each other a lot, but usually over the last cookies or serving of ice cream.

A little sisterly con goes much farther with me than all this tacky political aggrandizing.

I liked the comic, about an older sibling trying to con a younger. Strangely, I saw no mention of Obama or welfare in it.
