I did get the photos, class ring, and yearbook. I was on the yearbook staff—it was fun. I took many of the random pictures that appeared in my senior yearbook, and as copy editor I ruthlessly deleted copy whenever I could. The kids wanted MORE PICTURES, not words. I made sure a lot of the pics were of kids who had seldom or never had random candid shots in the yearbook before. God, I was sick of the dozen or so kids who had fifteen pics each in every yearbook. Haven’t thought about those days in many years. :-)

I note that the female model in the “Senior Memories” ad (lower right) is not Tiffany Farrell. It is nice to see Frank equipped with something to use for turnabout; Luann shouldn’t let being a senior go to her head (such as it is).

I am always amazed by how much Americans glorify the end of their secondary schooling. And a bit jealous too because it looks like fun, though from my point of view the (expensive) memory stuff is a bit overboard.

Have a friend in Ga that is too broke for fed assist on ACA (you have to be between 100 and 400% of the poverty level, she is below it) and too rich for Medicaid (Ga did not go for the expanded Medicaid program). Good news, they won’t fine her for having no ins. Have a family member in the same situation in NC. College grad working 28 hrs a week with no benefits.

About 2/3s of my students have jobs. Many have to do it because their income is needed to pay the rent and light bill in their family. (Some have children of their own, sadly.) Some work as much as 35 hrs a week.

I recommend anyone with children start a small savings account for their Senior year. My son had his hand out for something every time I turned around. Class rings, Senior pictures, cap and gown fees, Prom, Homecoming, college application fees, college commitment fee for housing, etc… I have two more kids, a high school Sophomore and an 8th grader…both now have accounts that I put $25/mo in. Should help when we get there!

How many Seniors today think about getting either a job or college in a year?.Any thinking of college had better be thinking about it before that—as at the college fair in Pittsfield last year.

Maybe Luann can become a partner in TJ’s lunch wagon business. Then, when the Feds find out that they are employing an Australian citizen who is here on a student visa, the whole cast can go to the penitentiary together. It will be refreshing to see Gunther wearing stripes rather than checks.

My parents didn’t bug me about getting a job until AFTER I had graduated from high school; the only thing I didn’t get to do in high school was driver’s ed since my parents didn’t want to waste the money at the time and insisted that I focused on my school work, my friends, AND band.

I still read the print paper, especially when I have a 55-minute to work and another 55-minute ride coming home. And yes, the papers still have the “employment opportunities” section, although not as extensive as before. For a person looking for a job, all media is good: print, online, cold calls, networking, referrals, associations, word of mouth, etc.

I live in Pittsburg and yes, we do have people who sells the papers every day and some others who distribute another one, free.

Our local newspaper has a jobs section in the classifieds for dailies and weekends, as well. And once a year, there is a “mega-section” printed as a part of the Sunday edition, advertised as being with “thousands of employers in it”…

I have an idea (if its not too snarky). Does anyone want to say why they like Luann’s GoComics comic strip? To me, its like watching an old soap opera, or linear week-to-week TV dramas. I also like to read peoples’ posts, as invariably they might have an opinion on what is going on that is different than mine. And, its just plain fun, a vacation of sorts from what can be weary day-to-day life. Now, I’m off to enjoy taking my Irish Setter for a walk in the beautiful sunshine! ;)

I’d also have to say that my favorite character is Toni. Luann is the “star of the strip”, but Toni’s mode of thinking and subtle wit and awareness are what draws me to her character… Frank, Nancy, Brad, Bernice, Crystal and Tiff…. And when Lu is not being ‘melodramatic’ or ‘swooning’ over someone, she also carries a sharp wit and can have good awareness, when she really wants to….

I bought 1 yearbook to get autographs from all my friends. My graduating class was over 800 (was talking to son today about my grand daughter’s being in top 25% of her class of 600) and she had straight As – she gets all the leads in drama (in school and the clubs she joined) but she’s very pretty and sings and dances well too. She applied to NYU and DuPaul. Her brother already started college but is transferring to Texas A&M for pre law.
