Ted Rall for April 12, 2013
Transcript:
They say Maggie Thatcher "took on" the unions. That England's economy had been "stagnant" that she "unleashed market forces by privatizing inefficient industries." "Taking on unions" ordering riot police to smash in the skulls of striking miners. "Stagnant" from 1945 until 1980, the english enjoyed the lowest income inequality in history. "privatization" stealing taxpayer-owned businesses from the public and giving them to political cones in corrupt sweetheart deals. "Unleashing market forces" Throwing millions of men, women, and children into the streets. With nowhere to go and no assistance from her government. Thatcherism created a brutal new "everyone looking out for number one." society it validated Reaganism which otherwise would have been an odd ideological singularity. (Woman: I have a kid... a mortgage... what am I supposed to do?)

“May her dessicated corpse rot along with her hateful ideas.”
Another “fair and balanced” comment from our favorite hate monger and quasi, clueless revolutionary without a cause. How interesting your observation on Britain’s masochistic behavior; they kept the hateful woman around for eleven years. Pretty long term for such a destructive, hated leader isn’t it? I presume you think the English people are pretty stupid for putting up with this wretched woman for so long.
sartre about 11 years ago
Thank you Ted. She was an awful leader and many of us looked forward to this day for a long time.
mattro65 about 11 years ago
What does that say about us? We’ve put up with corporate owned hacks ever since The Iron Lady gave England back to the rich.

She is dead…leave it alone already

Mickey1339, remember England is a country where the people in power can call for an election when they want one. She would call for an election when she had the best chance of winning. Even in a lousy economy, she was able to work the system and get re-elected.

Fair and balanced is a self-aggrandizing slogan Fox gave itself. When CBS called itself “most trusted”, they had polling to back it up. Thatcher, and Reagan, believed totally in trickle down economics. Even Bush I knew it was"voodoo"! Please, don’t pee on my leg and tell me it’s raining!

And why do you have a problem with a POLITICAL cartoonist not being fair?
greycheck about 11 years ago
I’m a Guardian-reading British “leftie”, and I marched against Thatcher in the day. There’s a lot to be said against her, but this is juvenile, inaccurate propaganda. And it fails the most important test for a political cartoon – it isn’t witty or funny.
SwimsWithSharks about 11 years ago
It’s funny because the Ebert strip got called grave-stomping. That wasn’t grave-stomping. THIS is!

Maybe British votes shoul elect Kim Jong-Un as their PM. He could fix ALL their problems!
zoidknight about 11 years ago
Actually, they will do it with anyone with money.
zoidknight about 11 years ago
Why do you think that because you do not work that you are entitled to the money of those of us who do?.
Ottodesu about 11 years ago
“confiscate all industry to give to their cronies, market forces will cease to exist throwing everyone owing $1 or more on their mortgage out on the street because the new government won’t know how to help those in need.”
Amazing! We agree!Hang on, you’re not talking about GWB and his wars and GFC, are you?You really don’t know how things work in the USA, do you?
Beppo10983 about 11 years ago
First, Roger Ebert now Margaret Thatcher. Ted must get tired from dancing on people’s graves. I guess the takeaway from this is: If you have opinions different from Ted Rall you’re evil and he wishes you dead. That’s what makes him so tolerant!
Ottodesu about 11 years ago
Oh, and I was neither a fan nor hater of Maggie. She had no effect on my life that I was aware of.

I think Rall’s point has less to do with Thatcher than with the fact that her existence somehow made legitimate Reagan’s terrible ideas as something which transcended our own borders.
That’s not to discount the suffering and decline of the UK in her wake. (There are Brits here who will attest to that.)

What a hateful and ignorant strip. Leave the dead alone you ingrate piece of humanity.
nana102 about 11 years ago
Only a coward would attack a dead person. Which strong women in Rall’s life does he really hate but is too afraid to say so? RIP Maggie.
kylegann about 11 years ago
Well done, sir.
Anarcissie about 11 years ago
I don’t think Thatcher is worth hating. De mortuis nihil nisi bonum.

I am a fan of Ted Rall, but his last two “comics” were unnecessarily brutish and not worthy of civilized discourse. Fighting fire with fire burns everyone [to wildly paraphrase Gandhi].This kind of post-mortem commentary is in extremely poor taste. We all need to rise above this level of rancor.

CORRECTOMONDO!

While I agree with many of the points of Rall’s last two comics I fear that by being so mean-spirited and unnecessarily personal he is only doing himself harm as well as offending others. If there is ever a time to let go of negative emotions it is when death intervenes.

Why are so many of you ignorant about the fact that Thatcher was PM not just of ENGLAND, but also of SCOTLAND, WALES and NORTHERN IRELAND. She was PM of the UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN. Get so sick and tired of Britain being referred to as England. How many of you with the nasty comments actually were born and raised in “England”? Or even an adult when Maggie was PM? Vicious comments come from vicious people – you all need to get a life!

And people thought Ted was being harsh to Ebert!
Ted Rall creator about 11 years ago
True. Thatcher certainly didn’t care about her own citizens when they were alive; indeed, her policies killed many of them. So why should we care about her now that she’s dead?
sartre about 11 years ago
@daddyvortex: You’ll be entitled to do that the moment I imagine I have a duty to “lead” you, or anyone.
kylegann about 11 years ago
All those suddenly sentimental about her because she’s dead should read Glenn Greenwald on “Margaret Thatcher and misapplied death etiquette”:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/apr/08/margaret-thatcher-death-etiquette
“This demand for respectful silence in the wake of a public figure’s death is not just misguided but dangerous. That one should not speak ill of the dead is arguably appropriate when a private person dies, but it is wildly inappropriate for the death of a controversial public figure, particularly one who wielded significant influence and political power. …those who admire the deceased public figure (and their politics) aren’t silent at all. They are aggressively exploiting the emotions generated by the person’s death to create hagiography.”
