Honestly, I’m not very excited about this story arc. I enjoy the crazy adventures with ray guns and mutants and bizarre physics. Another courtroom drama just doesn’t interest me as much.

I think the last courtroom scene took us pretty far and brought us all kinds of wild stuff. Even though this is just a comic the writing is much deeper and more along the lines a novelist would write. The only difference is that the scene is drawn for us and some of the characterization is shown to us rather than described. I don’t use the term “graphic novel” to describe Endtown because I have seen some really junky ones, but if you did use that term I would say it is on the higher end of the scale.

The interesting thing in these comments is the way commenters bring their own biases into them. I see a certain amount of the Christian right in Mr. Allgood but that’s because I’m predisposed to take a dark view of Christianity and am suspicious of those who try to write those values further into law. I think those who see President Obama, Socialism or other groups are doing much the same thing.

Let’s face facts, Topsiders, Endtowners, they’re both the same. People doing things they feel they have to BECAUSE it’s US or THEM. All the problems can basically be summed up in that people don’t want to let go of the past to move onto a future where maybe some of this stuff could be fixed.

But no, we’re stuck in a cycle of hate and dogma, instead of moving on. A pox on both your houses I say. Or at least a really nasty case of fleas for half of them.

Thinking out loud; well no, I am think in print because if I was thinking out loud, you would not be able to hear me and you are right now reading this.

Ok: the Society for the Preservation of Human Values, aka Mr. Allgood, wants to ban the use of any mutant excreted products (Milk and Eggs).

Dr. Mallard’s cohorts are working on growing plant materials also known as farming (August 18, 2011). With farming you need a nutrient mix that, unless there is a supply of guano, is not available in Endtown before the great move in. Even with fungus or hydroponics, you still need a nutrient solution that contains nitrogen.

That is, unless, you composes and sterilize excrement, which, if Mr. Allgood would have his way, could not be used because it is a mutant excreted product.

This is going to be very interesting to see play out in the next few months. Of course, I might be looking down the wrong rabbit hole.

Allgood is a panda because he thinks in black and white terms, and has apparently totally submerged his conscience in his ideology. Contrast him with the bipolar panda bear of Mythtickle whose coloration sports a yin-yang symbol and lives his child-like life in innocence and bemused curiosity.

Well here are my thoughts.Valerie needs to watch her back. She might be asked to take one for the “greater good”. (Allgood could use “a suspicious death” to Valerie as a ploy to show how bad the “mutant product” users are.)Has one considered what would happen IF the trial turn against the Society? It could go either way. Some “taboos” become criminalized because of hysteria and bad press. Allgood wants the bad press and hysteria. It only takes one speaking in reason and facts that can turn public sentiment.I wonder if Lincoln is available. Gandhi? Aristotle? A great orator. To dirtyoldlady1 that had to be disturbing to view. When I was being trained for combat they showed us the instruments and techniques that could be used on us. That is why I never planned to be taken alive. A quick death was much preferable over a slow painful one. I had a grenade with a zero fuse for the last great act of defiance. Pull the pin, release the lever, instant boom. Take me and maybe a few with me out.

To me the disturbing thing about this was that a few council members COULD have people who have (by Mr. Allgood’s own admission) not committed a crime arrested and imprisoned. If this could happen in one case…First they came for the mutant product users…I didn’t speak up because I didn’t use mutant products. Then they came for the former topsiders…I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a former topsider. Then they came for the impure humans…I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t an impure human. Then they came for me…and there was no one left to speak for me.

    Ah, dear…

The first problem with what he says is that he never mentions LOVING the sinner… and if you don’t care for the sinner, they have a bad habit of becoming collateral damage.

The second problem, of course, is that people have a very hard time separating others from their actions. “Love the sinner, hate the sin” is a fine objective, but it tends to falter badly if you cannot emotionally separate the two.

As for the concern regarding the statement on the part of Nabuquduriuzhur, I wouldn’t worry. Not only have all religions had at least one moment of which they are not proud, religion isn’t needed for this particular attitude. “You can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs”, remember, and that was said by a historian. (It should be noted that most people forget the second half of what the man said, however: “… but it is amazing how many eggs one can break without making a decent omelette.”)

JK Rowling said that Dumbledore was a “good” character. In spite of his actions. She never punished him, or Harry’s relatives for the intentional harm to a child. Dumbles knew of the abuse, but did nothing…the Dursley’s constantly abused their nephew Harry.

Dumbles justified child abuse (physical beatings), malnutrion by depriving a child of food, child endangerment and child slavery by quoting that it was for “The Greater Good"Harry had to sacrifice his entire childhood for Dumbles’ irrational thought processes. BUNK!!!

This character is EVIL —-just like Dumbles. JKR was WRONG!

There is NO excuse that is worse than “The Greater Good”.

We have to remember one thing here. This is not a “religious” issue. It is a human/mutant right issue. One side wants to basically ignore what they have become thinking themselves still human. Another side wants to embrace the mutant side ignoring the human they once were. Both ways are battling for the conscious of Endtown. The question that will be put forth is: Does having the ability to lay eggs or produce milk make you any less human than before? Its going to be an evolution discussion. What is the new definition of: Human. An Origin of “a” Species so to say.

Ease up on the Greater Good thing. Noble things have been done for the greater good.Soldiers stayed behind at Dunkirk allowing others to escape. The defenders of the Alamo holding against Santa Anna.RAF pilots taking on the German Air Force during the war. Firemen and Police rushed to the World Trade Center after the attack. Many other examples through out history. They gave up their good for the Greater Good. Its a sacrifice issue. The needs of many outweigh the needs of a few. UNLESS YOU ARE THAT FEW then it seems “Why me, Why do I have to”.Just in this context they are using it as a catch phase because it sounds good. “For the Greater Good” was also uttered by Aaron Marx at the Oracle. Do you think he meant it bad?So its not always bad. Just this time it seems bad as it is going to be tried, tested, twisted, and put under scrutiny. It all depends on how this comes out.Either way there is going to be a winner and a loser and the loser is not going to be happy.Folks like Allgood or Jackrabbit will not change because some court makes a decision. Sovereign Citizens Movement, Republic of Texas group have never accepted the court’s decision against them as a current example. If the court decides for Allgood or Jackrabbit then they are happy but if the court decides against them it makes no difference as they will not change. What does concern me is the placement of “sympathizers” in the High Council. This is stacking the deck so to say. This is really going to test Endtown’s “democratic” ideals.(As for me it chaps my butt when someone as narrow minded as Allgood TWISTS a noble statement like that to fit his own narrow minded views. He is probably the most sincere EVIL person I have seen Aaron create. Flask was bad but never this evil. I feel he is willing to do anything to get his agenda across and the rule of the land.)

“O Oysters,” said the Carpenter,“You’ve had a pleasant run!Shall we be trotting home again?’But answer came there none—And this was scarcely odd, becauseThey’d eaten every one.

“It’s all for the greater good.” I wonder whose ‘greater good’ it is meant for. Allgood impresses me as an elitist who is willing to use dubious means and willing dupes to carry out his vision of ‘the greater good’. Though I see that Roxie hasn’t been so thoroughly duped, or has begun to see how sleazy this unctuous panda really is.

@ ConstanzeN: I did not know which I wanted to cite, but “the greater good” expression bothered me. At one time I knew a quote from Gandhi that opposed the sacrifice of the few for the greater good. Somewhere, in my dusty cobwebs of mouse eaten memory I have the quote, but I can neither recall it or find it on da Google. I suspect it was phrased differently, but he did at one time verbalise the thought. I did find several copies of the quote referring to his admiration of Christ’s sacrifice, but he was opposed to the other being forced to sacrifice for the greater good.

At first I thought Neathery was going to do a Scopes Monkey trial over evolution, but now it seems clear this is going to be about gay rights, an allegory, if you will. I just don’t care to be preached at with a story, unless the story itself is compelling, and the preaching is minimally felt.
