well the chearledder was makleing me think of a cexie joke my friend told me i know it’s stupid but it the only joke i can think of at that time

Back in high school my family played host to a few boys who were with a visiting school band from up north. As we bedded down for the night my mom came in and asked them if they wanted some grits for breakfast. They looked at one another and one of them asked: “What’s a grit?”

Grits are a cereal with a texture like Scottish steel-cut oatmeal, made from bits of corn (maize). Traditionally served with butter and maybe some salt, but can be sweetened as well.

Soup or gumbo?! My father is rolling over in his grave laughing hysterically. Grits are the grain germ of corn, which is ground to make a hot cereal. It can be served with a very thick consistency as an entree or accent to an entree, or be thinned according to personal taste for a breakfast cereal. As the latter, it is often served with the same consistency as farina (better known in the states as Cream of Wheat).Grits is an incredibly versatile product which can be left bland enough to serve to toddlers or enhanced with shrimp and andouille sausage or cheese to make an inviting meal or side dish. Possibilities are limited only by imagination. Leftover thickened grits can be refrigerated, sliced and fried as “cakes”

I grew up eating grits although I was from the Midwest (maybe southern Midwest). I still love them, though I eat more oatmeal these days.

And sweetened iced tea.

Y’All or you all, is a reference to more than one person. Up north in some places the same reference is “you guys” or “you people.”

I see from allmof the comments that no one knows what Grits are, well Grits are made from Hominy Corn. The corn is soaked in a Lye and water solution then dried and ground up to be cooked in boiling water.

i read that some grits are ate with goats if u don’t belive look it up go to google then wikipeda the first one and in the box type grits

Mmmm….. Haven’t had any grits since … oh …. yesterday. Makin’ me hungry.

Grits are like Oatmeal, but made with ground up corn. I live in the Midwest, and they offer grits at certain restaurants. I put butter, salt and a tin of jam in them.

If you have not tried grits you are in for a treat. They are delicious. Put just a small amount of real cream in them..adds more deliciousness to them. Soooo good.

Tom, you are correct on the fixin. Personally I mix my grits with my eggs.

A plate of grits with over-easy eggs and crumbled bacon stirred in then sprinkled with Tabasco Sauce is a breakfast fit for royalty.

The terrapin knows the bird’s fake Southern accent sounds phony, thus the comment about being hogtied.

Fixed with salt, pepper, bacon (or bacon bits), butter, and shredded sharp cheddar cheese, with the consistency of thick pudding – but not the texture- a soup bowl full will not be enough. Try it and see.

New Yorkers encounter grits for the first time in this scene from My Cousin Vinny. (BTW, I’m a lifelong New Yorker myself, and I love grits. I order them whenever I see them on a menu, which is rare up here.)

Back in the ’70’s I had the opportunity to fly into Houston, TX, the first time back in Texas since basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio.The next a.m. my host took me to breakfast at a popular restaurant. When the gal asked if we all wanted “grits” with our meal I says WTF? So my host points to the table next to us and explains that was “grits” in a bowl. So in a too loud voice I says: Why that ain’t nothin’ but cream ’o wheat !!!Thought the waitress and building were gonna collapse !

There was a line in a song years ago….the title escapes me…but it was “grits ain’t groceries”….Or, like in My Cousin Vinny….“what’s a grit”?Grits are good!!!

That explains why the turtle warns the bird they might get hogtied. Southerners probably don’t appreciate snowbirds mocking their accent. The “g” would tell everyone that the bird is faking it.

I love grits, have since I was little, but lately, because of my inability to cook really good gravy, I have taken to making my grits with a beef bullion cube in it. Add a side of eggs with cheese sprinkled on the whole thing and all is right we the world. The only way to make it better is bake some biscuits to go with it. Hmm eggs and grits for supper today maybe?

I was at breakfast in the South with three officers, including a WAF Col. We were asked if we wanted grits and I was the only one to decline. The three were all from the South, so I was asked why. My response had them laughing in agreement; “Tastes like library paste.” “Best description ever heard” was the consensus.

Now, hominy is another story…it’s righteous!

Born in South Carolina and raised by a southern Mom, I love grits—even though I grew up in the Midwest. When I was a kid, you got grits at restaurants in the South whether you asked for them or not. I make them now with fried eggs over easy, pat of butter, lots of pepper. Yum! My Midwest-born husband likes them too!

Have never had or been offered Grits. …. Love kernel corn and corn on the cob. Not fond of cornmeal.. But if I can have it with all those other nice things like eggs, bacon, cheese, gravy….. I;’ll try it.

I’m from Texas and live in Arkansas. I love grits with butter. You Yankees can probably find instant grits (not bad but not quite as good as homemade) where the instant oatmeal is sold. Don’t bad mouth til you try it. I just had a big meal of frog legs today. How many Yankees eat that?

I also had crawfish with the froglegs. Yum.

The visiting band boys from up North who asked “What’s a Grit?” must not have been from Williamsport, a city up North in central Pennsylvania. A newspaper that caters to a national rural audience is published there. It’s name is “Grit”.
