“expoused”? Kelly espoused his own positions that were variously to the right or left, but mostly common-sense (and compassionate) centrist. He was no fan of Communists, certainly (see the cowbirds, the Famous Pig, Fido the Goat), but he also went out of his way to ridicule Senator Joe McCarthy (Simple J. Malarkey), John Birchers (Jack Acids), religious hypocrites (Deacon Mushrat), and so on (Molester Mole as the willfully-blind me-first “patriot”). In the culture wars of the 1960’s he sided more closely with the student radicals than with the outraged reactionaries (Wiley Cat and the Mi-Nute Men, wanting to take a shotgun to anybody who knew more than they did). His portraits of Agnew (a pompous hyena), Wallace (a White Knight boldly charging backwards on his White Horse, with his White Shield and White Sword), and Nixon (a scheming spider) were particularly scathing. He was in favor of environmentalism, peaceful resolutions, forgiveness, and community spirit. Kelly was in favor of ideals, but deeply mistrustful of idealogues of any stripe.
You italicize by putting a single asterisk before and after the text you want to italicize; make sure there is not a space between the asterisk and the text. Double asterisks (before and after) put text in bold face, and triple asterisks makes bold italic.
There are a few odd ins-and-outs to the system, but you’ll no doubt figure them out by trial and error.

My apology to you Ken, as it was pointed out to me that Walt Kelly’s humor was not limited to a consevative bent.
