Phil: Thanks for the dinner invitation.
Val: Before we eat you HAVE to see this photo.
Phil: Wow. Good for Evie.
Val: Phil! That's my MOTHER.
Phil: And I repeat...good for Evie.
Val: And I repeat - that's my MOTHER!
Enough with the horny-old-woman plot. Tex Avery did this kind of thing 70 years ago and did it better. It was funny back when men wore zoot suits, but the hip, cool, horny old grandma with the clueless daughter is just a bad cliche today.
Lighten up Val! Why should your mother be relegated to only babysitting and helping you out! Let her have a life for heaven’s sake, she’s not dead yet!
Val is just freaked out that it’s her mother, not that she’s too old for romance or that she doesn’t deserve it. Even though we know it’s not true, most of us would prefer not to think of our parents as *exual creatures.
The only part that I have a problem with is why is she carrying a picture around with her? That’s a bit creepy.
Depends on the age of a parent. My dad has been gone for 10 years and if another man would make a move on my mom she would go blastic. She will be turning 85 in April.
My dad passed on age 79.
Maybe Phil will calm Val down. Val wait until your daughter starts dating.
It’s not a horny-old-woman plot, it’s just horny-old-woman comments. The plot is simply about an older woman having a little late-in-life romance. When older people fall in love, they can get silly and giggly and flirty (and horny, too), just like the young’uns.
We don’t even know HOW OLD Evie is supposed to be, let alone how old Arnold is. She’s grandmother to a 13 year-old, sure, that could still put her in her 50’s. Maybe she simply went grey relatively early; maybe Arnold has just kept his color longer.
Evie has always been shown to be active and vibrant, whatever her age. Why should she be prohibited from having a boyfriend?
It’s not selfishness, it’s just lack of perspective. Holly resented Phil for a while, not just because the thought of “old people” like Val and Phil making goo-goo eyes was creepy, but because she saw Phil (erroneously) as trying to take the place of her dead father. Perhaps Val has a similar (subconscious) opposition to Arnold on that score. It may take Holly’s input (either pro-Arnold or anti- could do it) to get Val to see that she’s being unreasonable.
I believe somebodyshort’s correct that Phil is primarily a motorcycle cop, but we have seen him in a squad car as well.
or, @fritzoid, as trying to take away her mother’s attention? not quite the same as trying to take the place of her dead father.
I think it would be a nice plot twist to have Phil promoted to detective - with a substantial salary increase, of course. More respect from Val and the kids, easier to conceive of getting married - he could get a house in which part of it was just for his own space. And many stories could be told about how his detective skills helped solve some family problems.
Yep, I like it. (I’m very good a figuring out what other people should do - and, of course, telling them. But it doesn’t surprise or offend me when for some reason they don’t do it…)

What happens in Cougar Town stays in Courgar town.
She happy, who cares what her daughter thinks. She has issues anyways.

what if he is quite abit younger - you guys don’t mind younger women…we ladies of a certain ago don’t mind younger men. Remember ‘20 Carats’.
Besides, I think he is closer to Evie’s age than looks like. I like the plot line.

I think Val fails to realize that she’s in the same position.

I agree that Arnold looks a little scruffy, but Evie may admire other qualities about him; we women are not as visual in attraction as men are.

I agree with Phil “Good for Evie” Sometimes the kids (no matter how old) have to remember that parents are people. She should be happy.

Why is Phil always carrying a motorcycle helmut, when he drives a squad car? I mean, has anybody seen his bike?

Why does Val have a picture when Evie just posted it online?
