Never seen/heard/given that response. If I asked the question mom always had an ETD (estimated time of dinner), and I had one if my daughters asked me the question.

I feel like asking the question while holding both of her shoulders from behind is a bit disrespectful.

Unclear to me why she isn’t pleased that he’s hungry, looking forward to her cooking, and smiling affectionately.

Interesting that Tia Carmen in the 1st and 2nd panels seem to be identical: except for facial expression and Baldo’s placement, plus the condiments are flipped. Not a criticism, just noticing…

If it’s Carmen’s famous lengua casserole, Baldo might as go to Taco Bell and provoke his grandaunt even more.

He’ll ask the question, and it’ll turn out to be lengua casserole…

“I am home from school. How was your day Tia? I am glad to hear it was good (sorry to hear it was not good). That smells great – I can’t wait to eat it. Is dinner the usual time tonight? Should I set the table for you.”

Appreciation for the person and the meal might have helped.
