   I believe the value of the ring is in today’s dollars, not what it was worth in midevil times.

   Just like gold was only valued for it’s beauty when the Spanish first started exploring the Americas. It wasn’t used for currency, just as trinkets. Now we think it’s worth almost $2,000/ounce.
