As an aside, some of us actually like the geeky guy. I have been happily married to one for over 20 years! My dad, while a firefighter, was also not especially a “manly man.” I think he was just perfect that way.
I did get the novella and enjoyed it on a plane ride. It was very well put together and I can see where they thought they could do supplemental strips and then it didn’t pan out.
The long story short is that Bets and Gun are really different people. She is carefree and spontaneous, and he is more measured. They both love each other for who they are, but they struggle when their innate nature comes out. They learn to work together and figure things out, and learn a lot about themselves. They also learn the value of their counterpart.
Without spoiling anything that may come in the future, the novella ends when Bets decides to keep wandering (with an opportunity!), and Gunther comes home committed to finishing school. I think they recognize their fundamental differences, but the novella does not completely close any door or clearly articulate where their relationship is or is not. I think they don’t know.
Teenage boys. Having raised a few, it never ceases to amaze me what registers as a concern and what does not!
