It's the End of Civilization as we know it. A mutagenic plague followed by a global war fought with disintegration weaponry has left much of the Earth a desert of fine powder and what remains of humanity fragmented into humans, animal-like mutants and bloodthirsty monstrosities with lots of teeth. The surface, still teeming with the mutagenic virus, has become the domain of the dreaded Topsiders; well-organized, technologically advanced, and heavily armed un-mutated humans sworn to exterminate mutations of any kind in order to clear the way for the eventual resurgence of a new, genetically clean humanity. Faced with annihilation, mutants and "impure" humans have retreated into the depths of the planet to form communities and hope to win, or at least survive, what may prove to be mankind's final war. Endtown is the continuing story of one of those communities.

Hmmm…Oldtimers or just kidding. Sometimes with us old folks it’s hard to tell. Should be an interesting character.

Aww…Life’s become so bad for him that he’s immersed himself in a fantasy world? Whatever the reason, he’s affected Linda. That’s good. She needs to care for someone who’s worse off than herself.

Linda is sweating this out a bit. Who is Trudy? What does he mean by cake? He is a nice looking old dog, but what’s his story? I expect we will find out. Maybe Linda’s new friend and helper.

And Linda thought she had problems…

I’m thinking it’s Linda who might do the helping once Meg fills her in about him.

Aaron has a way of making you care about his characters, no matter what their circumstances. We already feel for Mr.Hopper.

By feel for, I mean have feelings for…Sort of like we’ve known somebody like him forever.

I take the hound comparison back. I think he’s a golden retriever.

He’s affected her alright. She’s scared!

Here, some lovely 40 bean cake. Forty pinto beans mashed with no salt and no seasonings…

Gentlemen such as our new character, should be encouraged, not hasseled . Working in a hospital I found that if you questioned them gently you could learn a lot about their like and a lot about your own life. It could be a temporary confusion, well maybe not in his case, and when they come around, they remember and hold it against you and probably all the other nurses too. It is not a job. It is a pleasure to help. AN has a caring soul.

Did he say 20 years? Wonder where he thinks he is?

Linda’s puzzled by his word
Not sure how to take…
But one thing’s clear and seems absurd
The lie is a cake!
Insisting you’re someone you’re not
Is tough on the brain
And just in this years-old spot
Can drive you insane

Mr. Hopper’s case is mild and it’s been six years since the End. Imagine how people’s minds were affected at the very start. We saw the chaos on the surface streets just before the bombs went off. The survivors’ sanity must have been stretched to breaking in the first year or so, with many snapping. I wonder how many are institutionalized and whether the functionally sane are the majority.
