Republicans care about nothing except gaining power. -Even if they gain power, they have no agenda, except to repeal health care reform and protect the low taxes for the ‘job creators’.-There is also a collarary to the voter fraud effort. On voting day, ‘truth squads’ will magically appear in minority neighborhoods to further the voter suppression.-True patriots, indeed.
It still bugs me when this subject comes up Florida is sometimes not even mentioned.Penn., Ohio, SC, come on, we are the champions of voter suppression!
Once again, it is not about having an ID, it is about having the RIGHT ID. How many will go to the polls thinking that the ID they used last time will work, only to discover that it is no longer acceptable? And too late to get another! Oh, my, what a pity!
voter fraud is a problem? the bush admin studied this for 5 years and found out no fraud epidemic. do people really think voter fraud is epidemic? the last time i voted, the voting station was basically empty. just the volunteers and couple of old ladies voting. when was the last time any of you voted, and not for american idol? was there suspected fraud, electioneering, etc?
What no one bothers to explain is how requiring a new picture ID is going to solve generic “voter fraud.” If someone were going to willfully commit a federal felony to change the outcome of an election, they’ll likely do one or more of the following:— obtain fake ID— remove or add ballots— rig electronic vote countingI’m aware these methods of fraud are not likely available to the average citizen, but said citizen has no real motivation to commit voter fraud. The people who do have the motivation are much more likely to have the resources.
The potential voters are not necessarily too stupid to get a picture ID, but they may be too poor. I have read on this forum that it is free everywhere to get an official ID, but this is not true. Many cases of different states that charge have been cited in this forum, and I know for sure that the state that I live in (Texas) does charge for the ID, plus you have to get it at the driver’s license bureau, and the lines are very long.
“It is spelled Corollary a propostition inferred immediately from a proved proposition with little or no additional proof”-Got me, and I acknowledge the egregious spelling error. I must have been ….brain dead!-And, you’re right, there is no proof and can’t be until November. But there were many reports of this happening during the 2008 election.-I hope to be proved wrong on this come November, and will acknowlege, if so.
The really big problem with the Electoral College is that most states have a ‘Winner Takes All’ rule.I did some calculations with the most recent Census data and realized that a President could be elected with a bare majority in only 12 states, that’s less than 25% of the popular vote.
The Canadian system is pretty much the same. Very simple. I do wonder, however, about homeless people — where do they get their voter cards? Probably most of them don’t vote, but they should be able to if they want to.
While 98% of registered voters in Pennsylvania voters think they have the required ID, 12% of them don’t, based on the Pennsyvlania government’s recent assessment. (Even the Republican governor can’t say what IDs are valid, so it’s not surprising that citizens don’t.) So over a million voters are having their rights taken away by Republicans, and the Republicans cannot present ONE SINGLE EXAMPLE of fraud that this law would cure. How much have the Republicans budgeted to make it possible for one million Pennsylvania citizens to get the IDs that are suddenly, and needlessly, required? Are they saying that’ll be free? That the Drivers License bureaus have that much down time? If you care at all for what America stands for, you NEED TO VOTE OUT THE REPUBLICANS. They are toxic to the very idea of democracy.
How come its okay for the government to force me to buy a state-issued ID card, that I have no other use for, but its not okay for the government to force me to buy health insurance, which I am virtually guaranteed to need sometime in my life?
Voting is one of our most fundamental constitutional rights. Unless there is a pressing public interest (which means a lot more than one or two cases of fraud in the last ten years), voting should be as easy, not as hard, as possible.
“a system of fifty different sets of laws and regulations, complete with a byzantine “electoral college”, not even to mention things like “Super Delegates” and caucuses”I agree . . . we really need electoral reform . . .
“The party that sponsors an ever-increasing tax burden, more onerous regulations and out-of-control government spending is worried about state governments adding an extra layer of common sense protection to the voting system. taxocrats are the party of fraud!”Not only has Obama NOT raised taxes, but I know I received tax credits in 2009, 2010 and 2011 – the first two as part of the Stimulus bill. When the vote to extend the payroll tax cut came up 7 months ago, the ‘Tea Party’ voted not once but TWICE to not extend the tax cut. The Tea Baggers were outvoted by democrats and ‘normal’ republicans, otherwise my taxes would higher right now.I guess you don’t pay taxes, otherwise you would know this.
so, what’s next if those strict voter id laws are upheld? only one ethnic group gets to vote? or, that people over the age of 35 can vote? or, those with net worth of $1 million can vote? or, men can vote? or, only gop gets to vote?
Voter fraud is mainly mythological. I would rather see a few people vote twice than to stop thousands of people from voting.Isn’t voting a constitutional right?
You’re missing the point. It’s not about having IDs to do this or that, it’s about throwing elections by refusing to let people vote. .Do a thought experiement. If having voter IDs would somehow favor Democratic wins, do you really think the GOP would be pushing so hard against their phoney “voter fraud”? In the swing states, no less, where a few thousand votes can make all the difference?.Get to what this is really about, please.

How many eligible voters would you keep away from the polls to prevent one case of voter fraud? A hundred? A thousand?
