I’d be interested to know the actual description of the painting because of the way the other men in it have their eyes either averted or looking sideways. Can anyone help?

A note in the image Wikipedia page says its inspiration is a Alexander Ostrovsky play by that name, discussed on 4 pages in the introduction portion of an online book (click View all in the colored bar to see all references).A Vasily Sleptsov story with the same name also predated the painting. A different (more accurate?) coloration image is available from here (I find the paintings/photos within the painting quite remarkable). The artist’s Wikipedia page and collection.
