You’re thinking of “The Court of Last Resort” which gained attention due to its involvement in the infamous Sam Shepherd case. .But Erle Stanley Gardner didn’t wait to retire – he was bored with legal routine (except for trial strategy) and took to writing pulp fiction and the Perry Mason series in his 40’s and was so successful he quit the law. .“Court” was actually a TV show that he co-produced in the 50’s, with a crime drama format that dramatized possible miscarriages of justice, but it grew out of a group that Gardner organized that included medical investigators, a handwriting expert, a polygraph examiners, the former head of the American Academy of Scientific Investigators, and the former warden of the Walla Walla State Penitentiary. .They did get new trials for several prisoners and at least one that I know of was found innocent, but they pretty much sank under the burden of trying to figure out which cases they were flooded with had merit and which didn’t.

Tiffany will wind up working truck stops or the Chicken Ranch. With her lack of talent, even the casting couch would be no help. But Luann and Aussie Boy would make a couple to draw to.

Hi.This is making me think of the storyline right before the Weenie World storyline where Tiff went out to Los Angeles and auditioned for some kind of role and slowly it came out that she was understudy to an actress who had a big part in a production if my memory serves me right. At this age I will be happy if my memory serves me at all. (LOL HAHA)Ok enjoy.

The people I knew who went into “theater” did so because of a love of doing it, not for the money. Occasionally, one would pop up with a touring company, or in a commercial on TV, but I think the stage was just in their blood. Maybe Luann doesn’t realize that yet.

And some graduates have $100-$150K in debt, and either fail the bar exam, or pass it and can’t find jobs. It’s a pretty grim picture these days. Better to tell your kids or grandkids to become truck drivers instead. Seriously.

Very, very few. And only when they’ve had years and years of {gag} EXPERIENCE {barf). Someone who just passed the bar exam will be lucky to get a position that starts at $35K per year. The big law firms have been laying off for some time, and just hanging out a shingle gets you about as much as having a paper route.

You’re already on stage, Luann. It’s called a comic strip and you’re only as good as the script you are given by Greg. So, get on the ball, Greg, if you want a "star’. Costuming, make up, hair…….make the girl a “package”. That’s how the no talent people like Justin Bieber make it……….all illusion and hype.

If Delta REALLY wants to help people, she should look into becoming a public defender for people charged with crimes who can’t afford a lawyer. It’s not glamorous, but helping people shouldn’t be about fame and glory.

The role of a lawyer is (or at least should be) to properly represent people so that justice is served and people’s rights under the law are respected.

If someone wants to be a lawyer in order to help “the poor” instead of people facing serious legal problems (regardless of income level) then he is starting out with the intention of being biassed and probably corrupt and shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near a courtroom.

It’s easy to see law as the profession where ethics go to die, but that could really be any profession…it’s the individuals involved who choose one way or the other..And to the selfless, pro bono legal organizations already mentioned, I’ll add the ACLU.

And everyone else is working for the sheer love of it? Please. Quite frankly, it sounds like you basically resented having to pay for the legal service in the first place, but if you felt you were being ripped off, why didn’t you go to a different, better attorney? .FYI, I can assure you that the Innocence Project, the ACLU, or other organizations like that are most definitely practicing law. If the IP finds exculpatory evidence for a convicted client, that doesn’t mean he automatically walks free. The state doesn’t like to look bad, and you don’t manage to get a new trial or a conviction overturned by bringing the bench a note from your mother. .The fact is that everyone in a profession has to be concerned with their bottom line or they won’t be in business at all – which is why very few professional people give away their education and services for free. However, many firms do a percentage of pro bono work for nonprofit agencies and disadvantaged individuals – when was the last time you did something for nothing for someone? You just end up sounding extremely foolish when you make statements like the one you did.

Sorry, a good criminal defense attorney usually makes much more than your standard prosecutor – if you’re in it just for the money, you don’t work for the state. You get a salary, you don’t charge by the hour the way a criminal attorney does..Plus, states get just what they pay for. Ever had jury duty, or watched Court TV, and wondered about the disparity in performance between the prosecutor and the defending attorney? The William Kennedy Smith trial was a case in point – Moira Lasch, the prosecutor, who was supposed to be “brilliant” was embarassingly inept. Ditto the Casey Anthony, Menendez brothers and OJ prosecutions – disorganized, overreaching and ineffective. Those prosecutors would starve as defense attorneys if they had to compete in an open market. .At least the Menendez Bros were finally convicted after a second trial, but there was one point here in LA when people were saying,“Well, at least they got Zsa Zsa off the streets.”

Shoot, I’d rather tell you about the rabbits. The insurance industry would love to have you think it’s all costly over-the-top lawsuits that crank up the price of malpractice insurance. It’s BS. Mismanaged underwriting is to blame. .My brother’s an ER physician and he’s seen his insurance premiums go nuts in years when lawsuit payouts have actually been on the decline – ditto for the OB/GYN member of his practice. In addition, what people don’t know is that in many states there’s a cap when it comes to suing insurance companies, so the Big Boo Hoo over the high cost of lawsuits is more like Big Hooey..What you’re seeing in the doubling and trebling costs is the insurance companies’ attempt to recoup massive investment losses – like banks, investments are their main source of income, not your monthly payment per se. Peaks in insurance premiums have happened 3 times in the past 50 years – in the mid 1970s, the late 1980’s and in the past decade. If you actually believed the “lawsuit” excuse you’d also have to believe that juries somehow stopped awarding huge verdicts from 1975 until 1987, then started again, then stopped, then started again after 2001. If you believe that, I have some lovely swampland beachfront property in Florida to show you. .Would you rather not have the person who’s treating you or your loved one covered by insurance? If a doctor screws up – and it does happen for various reasons – you could be left dead, maimed or otherwise impaired. The MD who treats you is in a heavy penalty profession when it comes to mistakes, and due to that he isn’t exactly making minimum wage – you deserve to be made whole if he screws up where your treatment is concerned.

You need good lawyers to protect you from bad lawyers..Luann expects to make much money in entertainment, but the term “starving artists” must have come from somewhere..The thing which I enjoyed about the old Perry Mason shows was that the guilty always confessed on the stand and the ever-innocent client was acquitted.

".How could it be universal if Luann even considers becoming a Thermodynamic Astrophysicist? Plus I’ve worked with a number of women geologists and engineers and my appliance repair lady isn’t male. .Women DO tend to go into other fields but they are free to choose.

“Hospital facilities aren’t non-profit agencies”.Actually, some hospital facilities ARE non-profit. If you had two hospitals in town, one with a normal cost of $40,000, the other with a normal cost of $10, most people would try the $10 option first..It’s easy to imagine county health clinics having the equipment on hand. It’s easy to imagine Homeland Security taking part of its upgrade in the interest of preparation for bioterrorist attacks..“Also, since people are far more complex than cars, automated diagnosis will never have a zero margin of error, so liability can never be cancelled out.”.Agreed, but artificial intelligence systems might have a far lower error rate than fallible doctors. Doctors are distracted, grow forgetful, become sleepy or get sick, miss symptoms, grow overconfident or under confident, make up their minds what the problem is no matter if there are other symptoms pointing elsewhere. So even if this raised our rate above that of $10, it should still have a lower liability rate than that of a doctor not using the automated systems..I forget the percentage — since I’m becoming forgetful, but something like ninety percent of all medical complaints were for twenty problems. If you could instantly diagnose and treat those twenty ailments, you would free up time for the other ten percent. If ninety percent of those were for a hundred problems and you could instantly diagnose and treat those extra hundred, you would free up time for the one percent of complaints which do not fall in the first one hundred and twenty most common ailments.. The future of health care lies in improved use of technology to reduce human costs.
