Separation of Church and State implies, among other things, that Churches shouldn’t get special deals to avoid the laws that everyone else has to obey.
You don’t think there’s an answer to that, but there is! Government represents and defends the people against groups and forces larger than individuals. When a business enacts practices that are harmful to the American way of life, then government is obliged to act.Not to mention things like, oh, the FDA, the USDA — all of which protect Americans from the depredations of dishonest businesses.
About a year ago, I posted the following reply to one of harley’s screeds. ( paraphrasing )
“I’ve seen a hundred guys like you on the net, ultra-conservative, twenty-something geniuses, all of them with a foolproof plan to accumulate wealth beyond anything the loser libs can ever hope to attain..
And every single one of them ended up the same way, bitter and blaming everyone else but themselves."
Has that prediction finally come to pass, I have to wonder? Harley’s certainly been ramping up the anger and bitterness these past weeks, and I haven’t seen him boasting about his financial accumen for quite some time now.
I think what is being forgotten is that some contraceptives are prescribed for more than just prevention of pregnancy. Birth control pills can be used to treat endometriosis and other health issues. In some cases a woman’s menstrual flow is so heavy she can become anemic without some method of regulating her menstrual cycle. What is being protected is the right of the doctor to prescribe birth control pills or other contraceptive solutions to various health problems without fear of an insurance company or hospital denying it because it is labeled as a contraceptive.

The purpose of government is also to protect our rights from those who would take them from us. A hospital is a business but it’s purpose is to help those in need and provide the necessary care. For an institution to call itself a hospital but not be willing to provide the proper care to it’s patients is a scam to those who may need it. The government sets guidelines to ensure that no matter what hospital I need to go to I get the care I need. They do not have the right to deny care to anyone willing to pay for their service.
The government has A responsibility to be there. If you say you are there to provide a specific service, and you accept money without providing that service, you are committing a crime called fraud. The government sets laws and standards to ensure fraud does not happen or is punished when it does. A hospital has a responsibility to the health of it’s patients, regardless of who funds it. If the catholic church does not want to provide something a doctor prescribes in the best interest of the patient, they have no business running a hospital. You describe an Ayn Rand style dystopia which may appeal to Wall Street executives, but a hospital by it’s very nature relies on altruism.
It’s the rightwing guys who want to intrude in your personal business such as who you can or can’t love, or if you chose to only have 2-3 kids as opposed to a kid every other year. In the end they don’t want you to choose whatever religion you want, instead they want a theocracy.
Right! It works the other way, too. If a church affiliated business employees someone not a member of their sect, do they have the right to tell the employee they must conform to their religious beliefs. The Catholic faithful are not forced to use contraception, and it doesn’t follow that the church should impose strictures upon others. If a non-Jew works for a Jewish organization, should they be able make the employee conform to Sabbath and kosher restrictions? Besides theologically, the anti-contraception stance is on thin ice. “Be fruitful and multiply”? I’m sure God recognizes human-kinds success in that area.
Cons only want government out of corporations lives, since they’re people, and not out of individuals lives that they think they should be able to tell how to live.

Grainbelt – totally right. Kudos for actually knowing something about history.
This is simply another example of Obama derangement syndrome, where opponents are using whatever they can to formulate an issue against Obama.

For anyone who thinks conservative Republicans really want Big government out of ordinary peoples’ lives, I have three words.
1. Terry
2. Schiavo’s
3. Law

Both should be on the same side. The choice in each case should lie with the individual.
