You know, this stereotype is about played out. Thanks Greg for perpetuating the big unintelligent oaf mentality. Protip: Some of the smartest people I’ve worked with were Marines. No not the stereotypical people who are rejected by all the other branches so they have no other choice but the Corp, but genuinely intelligent, well mannered individuals, who just happen to be very big and scary strong. Thats just within this last year. I recall several of my friends in High School were in amazing shape, big and intelligent. One of our Defensive Linemen for the football team graduated as valedictorian. But hey, lets continue to associate that big means unintelligent. Wow, I’m losing more and more faith in this comic lately.

Agreed, Nuki. “Strong as an ox, and twice as smart” is a funny thing to say about Marines, but not accurate. Of the Marines with whom I interacted, even the ones who weren’t that well educated were still insightful, thoughtful and skilled.

Semper Fi “NUKI and YASSIR” In all walks of life we meet folks that are more talented than others. It is what they do with what has been given them that makes the person. It has been my great privilege to serve the CORPS for years. Ox would make a great medical corpman (DOC) and Gunther embodies many, many of the talents of a Gunnery Sargent (GUNNY) in the making. Both of them would have your back and will make good fathers.

They’re ALL stereotypes. So what? Gunther the Nerd. Luann the confused self-centered teen. Tiff the clueless even MORE self-centered teen. Both blondes. Homely Brad the motorhead. Bombshell Toni. Hipster Doofus Knute. TJ the schemer. Crystal the far out chick who looks like every other “alternative” dresser. Bernie the brain. Ann the tyrant bitch… regular everyday folks just don’t make it in a comic strip, unless you want to be bored to death by Funky Winkerbean’s cast.

I’m thinking we’re doing “Of Mice and Men”, but with a happier ending this time. I’m always up for new characters, it helps keep the strip fresh and interesting. As for being stereotypes being played out, there are only so many plot lines out there folks… all the rest are merely variations on a theme. ;)

A cartoon has to have quirky stereotypes or the character will become totally forgettable, like Bernice or Quill. Its like the “voice actors” on TV or radio. Unless there is something “special” in their voices, the message goes in one ear and out the other. So says my nephew, the voice actor. It was probably Tiffany who first drew my attention to the strip.

Always had had a bigger bud. Often a lot of wisdom emanates from that point of view. I think bigger people havebigger souls…I mean, that’s my speculative rationalization.

Besides, how much better friend can you have than someone who steps up to keep you from harm? He really bailed Gunth out of a jam.

Those are your real and trusted friends…when the going gets tough it’s really good to have friends.

I don’t understand why somebody would read a simple, enjoyable comic strip and take exception to a plot device. I saw no attacks on Marines to warrant the response that was elicited here. I’m sure there are very many intelligent and strong Marines, but how on earth did one make the leap from Gunther’s HS friend OX to stupid Marines?

To everyone complaining about Greg perpetuating the stereotype of big, dumb guys: some big guys ARE dumb. Not all smart guys are socially inept, but I don’t hear anyone complaining about THAT stereotype with Gunther. This is a comic strip, and stereotypes are used for comedic effect. If you don’t like that, why not go read Mary Worth, or some other “real life” comic?

Rephrasing what I was saying yesterday, perhaps they both will learn from each other. It would be nice if Gunther could help Ox in taking better notes, study habits etc.And Ox can should Gunther look at life from different view..As for those who are whining about stereotypical, what would you want Ox to be like?

I mention Marines because I am on a Marine base and I am a former Army man. Whenever I come back from Afghanistan, and people find out I’m on a Marine base, I hear all types of stereotypes being thrown around. I simply chose that because it is the closest at hand per se. However, it does relate here because many Marines are big guys because of their training. However, the essence of my statement is that certain stereotypes are played out and should be left to die. As mentioned previously in the comments, it would have been even more impressive if Ox was in the Gifted and Talented, perhaps he used to be small and got big growing up.

I am often impressed that Greg handles mature subject materials in which the conclusions have impact. Lately its been drivel and deus ex machina. As mentioned I do believe I will be “turning the channel” so to speak.
