Spoken like someone who either doesn’t have children or doesn’t spend a great deal of time around children. For all you know dad spent the previous 3 hours “bonding” with his son. Perhaps he is to tired and/or stressed (being human) to have the hallmark moment you want him to have and almost certainly does not want to reward the negative behavior from Calvin by allowing it to have positive effect.

Calvin probably did something to deserve this.

Why is it whenever someone criticizes a strip everyone gets defensive and nasty about it? I don’t remember there being a rule that you have to praise every comic strip and there can never be anything wrong with themBack when Calvin and Hobbes was still young, Watterson got so much angry mail for the way he depicted Calvin’s parents as nasty and uncaring (the “dachshund” strip costing him many readers) that he finally toned it down.

@SUSAN NEWMAN: First of all, as others have already pointed out, this is supposed to be a comic strip, where things are exaggerated for the purpose of humor. But, if you want to get serious, it is not a good idea, generally, to reward bad behavior. What Calvin was trying was basically extortion.And Dad actually DID take time to teach Calvin something, which he admitted to Hobbes that, like it or not, he did get the point. So, relax. All’s well that end’s well.

… I think parents are at their most grouchy at the end of the day… everyone is tired! obviously this is an exageration for the sake of humour!

I wonder if this is payback for that story he made up where he locked his dad in the basement…

The notion of spending the rest of my life locked up in the basement would keep me awake all night.

When I was in grade school, I had to milk a cow before breakfast, and hunt her up in the pasture after school for the evening milking. By bedtime, I didn’t need a literature fix.

A bonding moment for Calvin and his Dad.. Yes, one in which Calvin has learned an important life lesson.. When an adults say i will do it tomorrow.. It is always best to go along with it…..

I enjoyed reading to my children but a threat would not have produced their desired effect. No book for you!

I’m thinking you must be new to the site here. It seems this comic is not meant to be strictly for humor, as you will discover if you continue to check it. There is always a social or psychological message being delivered if you listen to some. I used to attempt to view Calvin and Hobbes as a comic strip, but was repeatedly told it’s SO MUCH MORE. Shame on you (and me) for looking at is as the humor of a young boy and his pet stuffed toy, and not seeing the “deeper meaning” in it. Well, good luck. Hope you can find humor in the strip in spite of all the psycho-babble bs and ego stuffed in your face daily by some here. Have a good laugh now. :)
