True. One hour griping, one hour thinking of ways to escape unnoticed without cleaning up, one hour to decide whether to be stupendous man or spaceman spiff …. It all adds up.

The trick is to grip while you are cleaning. Before you know it the cleaning is finished. You can of course continuing the griping though. :)

Depends on what you call ‘clean’, Mom. I am surprised that Calvin didn’t come up with *his * interpretation of cleanliness.

When I’m working out a problem or I’m angry I clean. The house looks great afterwards and I feel alot better and I know the solution. If there’s not enough to clean I go to the gym and work it off for a couple hours. My Mom never went to a gym to work out but we had a very clean house!

Calvin, if you clean up your room and don’t mess it up again, you’ll never have to hear “Clean up your room!” Apparently, your aversion to hearing “Clean up your room!” is less than your aversion to actually cleaning up your room. Furthermore, if you ‘get off the schneid’ and clean your room ‘toot sweet’, your day won’t be wasted. BTW, one of my pet peeves is the wording of the saying, “A mind (day) is a terrible thing to waste.” What’s wrong with it expressed that way?

It was Hercules who diverted the river, Styx, to clean Zeus’ stables, if my mythology is correct. Sure! Couldn’t Stupendous Man do the same thing?

Lewreader, “According to myth, Hercules cleaned out the Augean stables by diverting the course of a river.” “The Augean Stable was one of the Twelve Labors of Hercules. Hercules’ task was to clean out a stable that had been soiled by years of neglect. Hercules succeeded by using a boulder to gouge out a trench, diverting a river (possibly the Alpheus) through the stable.” Are you a mythology buff?

Never could get my youngest to clean up her disasterous room, so I finally did it for her one last time in a big way….tossed all her scattered toys, clothes and whatnots in big trash bags and set them out in the garage where she had to go and search through them to retrieve whatever item she was looking for. The stubborn little darling eventually got the message. :)

My parents always said as long as the mess didn’t go in front of the door, where other’s could see it, and as long as it didn’t come out of my room then it was my responsibility and if I didn’t want to clean it that was up to me. I realized more often than not I wanted to clean it after a while. Just a thought! :D

Oh the tangled mess we leave , when our room isn’t clean….If at first you don’t succeed , start hiding things, indeed. Under thy bed is a good place to start. Then from there just follow your heart. In the closet behind the stairs, You can put stuff everywhere.Till at last the chore is done. Now get outside and have some fun .!!

If he doesn’t watch out, all of that anguish and hate will manifest itself in high blood pressure and a coronary. He should calm down, clean the room, and go outside with Hobbes for a game of Calvin Ball. The exercise will do wonders for his attitude. Wait a minute, this is Calvin I’m talking about………NOT!

The problem is that Calvin doesn’t see it as a mess Mom. It is cluttered organization. Unfortunately, Calvin lives in a house of “Mom” rules. So either abide or get out.

My daughter nows of a former girl friend when they where children it’s her responsiblity to clean her room, got older she had to make her own lunch. Her mom treated her small little girl younger then Calvin responsbilities.

Ushindi I think you Calvin is great represents a lot of children and sometimes adults.

Which takes more energy- Putting the toilet seat down or

Aerwalt, why putting the seat down of course! Bit**ing doesn’t use any calories at all.

I’m still waiting for my daughter (now 40) to clean her room. I’ve got stuff in my basement from when her now 18 year old son was a newborn. So I have a lot of sympathy for Calvin’s Mom.

Quite the contrary, I’d argue that it uses a LOT of calories. Anything that draws upon the Jungian Shadow takes a LOT of transmission power.

It ain’t worth it to go on the Bad Attitude Weight Loss Program, though.

Dare I ask, MatureCanadian, where your daughter and her son are living? Not meaning to pry…

I’d clean my “room” too, if I had any place to store anything properly! Rarely have I had anything like that in my life, save on my computer (where everything is neatly, if heterodoxically, filed).

And then another hour kickiing thigs across the room, yanking drawers open & shoving them shut. Then i have to slam the closet door open & closed again several times. Then I can sit & think of the easiest way to get out of cleaning.

Yes, if he cleans up, he won’t know where to find anything!

(As to putting the seat down, put it down. But also be sure to put the lid down. If one has to open, the other has to open, too.)

When you get older, and hardly anyone drops by, you can keep your place “Calvin style” all you want. My room was always messy, but in such a way that it could, if necessary, be cleaned up very quickly. There’s an art to this, not sure I can exactly explain it….

I should have known when my first born son asked for a dumpster for his 5th birthday that he had inherited Grandpas hording gene.

    There came a point when I just said, -Pick up the books, the dirty clothes and don’t take food to your room;

Once he stashed a hot dog in his raincoat pocket and we thought something had died inside the walls.

The toilet seat dilemma in our house is solved simply. There are 3 of us living here now. We have 3 bathrooms. Even though we share their use, each of us has charge of 1 bathroom. The seat stays down in mine. In my husband’s and son’s, it is their choice. In a twist on the “silent treatment”, when my husband is angry with me, he will go in my bathroom and leave the seat up.

I, on the other hand, am an unrepentant pig. I don’t have a sweater drawer because there’s a box I can throw them on top of. And the floor catches the rest. Same with clean clothes - they’re already in a container called a laundry basket; why should I go through the trouble of folding them?
