I’m not sure wasp spray will do much for hornets in the nest. Only those outside will be affected. I use wasp spray for the brown wasp with good effect.
At a former job, a coworker had the bright idea of spraying a wasps nest outside with a CO₂ fire extinguisher. He figured that would freeze them instantly. Instead, there were a lot of very annoyed wasps who resented what he’d done to their home, and it was a while before anyone could go outside. And it also cost the company a couple of hundred dollars to have the fire extinguisher refilled.
When I worked on a farm, early ’70s ….. I got covered with Ground Wasps …… luckily there was a garden hose hooked up near by and another worker hosed them off me …….. was pretty dizzy for a few hours but came out of it OK …… ;)
The benefits of Wasps, is they help us through pollination, predation, and parasitism. Put simply, without wasps, we would be overrun with insect pests, and we would have no figs—and no Fig Newtons. Hornets and paper wasps prey on other insects and help keep pest insect populations under control. I’ll keep the buzzers around.

Use brake cleaner. Works faster. (The chlorinated one, the unchlorinated is too flammable.)

I’ve found that for the odd single wasp, a squirt of windex knocks them down for a quick stomp. (probably works for the married wasps too :-)

Wasp spray is 3 times as effective as pepper spray, and has a 15 foot spray. Just wish they made it in smaller spray cans!
