Calvin’s greatest snow art ever…it seems physically impossible, especially for a six year-old…and his dad just thinks Calvin’s school doesn’t assign enough homework?
While everyone admires the C&H snowman cartoons (of which there were many), nobody ever thinks to thank Bill Watterson for his kindness in giving the colorist an occasional day off.
Focus more on the good here. In order to obtain the amount of show to make this scene of genocide is giving you a perfectly dry area to walk on to get to work.
That’s not the problem—it is that Calvin doesn’t do the homework—he thinks he is smart enough without it and that his abilities are best used in other for worthwhile pursuits ! ! ! !
If only. My grandson doesn’t get any homework assigned. The woke position is that Homework takes away from “family time”. Just another angle from the Teachers’ Union" to give teachers less work to do in the 1/2 year that they work now.
I know the subject matter could be considered in poor taste, but the fact is, both the creativity and the hard work needed to sculpt something like this are awe-inspiring. I’m tired of Calvin not getting credit for those traits.
Fortunately, a child would never have enough snow to build that monster sculpture. Once you roll a snow ball in one area, the snow is gone and you have to move farther away and transport heavy snow to your location. Moving a large snow ball is very difficult.
If Calvin put as much effort into doing his assignments as he does to things like this, he’d be the star pupil of the school. It takes some serious ingenuity and talent to create such snow sculptures without them falling apart. Just look at the monster’s tentacle holding up the snowman. How does he manage that?
I grew up in upstate NY in the 70s and I refer to it as my “Calvin and Hobbes” childhood. Sledding in winter, running through the woods in the spring, out all day and evening in the summer, and making leaf piles in the fall. It was perfect. And there was almost enough snow to do Calvin-like sculptures. But who had time with all the adventuring? :-)
Calvin’s art is clearly wasted on his dad. Plus even if Calvin had homework the snowman project is more important. His dad should be taking photos of the art with Calvin and Hobbes standing next to it. Calvin might get full credits at school, at least in arts.

Calvin would disagree with you there, Dad. Even if it’s just one assignment, it would still be too much.

And I think Dad is a humorless jerk!!
I love the strips focusing on Calvin’s snow creatures. I’m glad we’ve moved away from snowball battles and on to his creations.
Just imagine if some stranger took pics of Calvin’s snow sculptures and posted them on Facebook!! Think Children’s Services might be notified?

It’s the dream that Watterson wanted to build but was never able to produce in real life.

Even if Calvin was assigned more homework, he’d get Hobbes to do it while he was outdoors.

If Calvin did this all in one afternoon, then dad is almost certainly correct.
